in trying to recreate some of the sounds made back then.

You need old roland gear.

Liam used to use a roland W 30 as a synth sampler and sequencer all in one - the vast majority of the first two albums were done entirely on and in a W 30.
Alpha juno 2 for the charley hoover sound, which is THE rave (and hard house) sound.
The strings from out of space (and a couple of other tracks) came from a roland u220 - basically a preset with chorus slapped on.
Try a jupiter 8 too and a juno 106 too, and for effects he swears by the Boss SE-70s

Learn to program and learn to sample.

Good luck with that.

ha snap! I was thinking this weekend of where to get some old skool stabs from for a track.

I know FAW CIrcle has a good hoover copy in their presets, other than that I only know you can get samples from like the hardstyle CDs like Blutonium.

Would be good if we could both try to recreate some ones like the Congress - 40 miles stabs and post up here the setting we used. I'll try it out when back from work!

that type of thing(sort of).rave synths arnt to hard to make only the overall sound is very hard to do.so lets play and see what can be done.

There is a sample CD called "Ravers Revenge" that might be the kind of thing you are looking for.

Yeah, this was before he then switched to doing everything in reason.

Actually, if you want to get ideas for rave/oldskool/hardcore samples, look for the "Hardcore - you know the score" compilations (yellow and red CD's). A lot of the oldskool classics on there.

Ahh....takes me back to labarynth, bagleys (and a couple of fields...)

You need to be more clear about your intentions, or just STFU.

I honestly suggest you pick the latter.

This is my era. So a bit of a history lesson here, so apologies if I go off on one..

Now you need to remember that this music was new and fresh then- there were no rules except the bass had to be deep ( sine test program straight out of the back of an akai) and breakbeats were cut up. Aside from that anything went- which is why this period produced some amazing music.

You also have to remember that these synths- analogue ones- were dirt cheap at the time.
You literally couldnt give them away, as they were being replaced by digital synths(kicked off by the dx7). Tb303? a friend of mine swapped his for a pint of beer- noone wanted them...
..until people doing hardcore duiscovered that you could nake these noises with them. So they were snapping up this dirt cheap gear left right and centre and making these awesome tracks, really pushing what the gear could do and programming them.

The heart of this sound is the akai S1000 & s950 samplers (no sampler anywhere does drums & drum loops like an s950...even today).
You can pick them up criminally cheap nowadays.

Sadly, everything else you need for that sound is rather more cash nowadays. Vintage synths hold their value for a reason.

You could do a lot worse than a alpha juno 1 or 2 or an SH101- but these arent cheap. Not many soft synths around for these- although there are some.
Try here:http://kunz.corrupt.ch/?Products
for an SH101 and a Juno, which are very very good soft versions. That should get you started.
If you wanna use samples:
http://www.zenhiser.com/dl/oldskool-hardcore-stabs-synth-hits-01.html would be a good start- although listening through the samples, I can tell you that every single one of those has been ripped from a track- I recognise them all. Just saves you some work, thats all..

Oh- and the main riff from 2badmice-bombscare is a preset on a casio CZ-101. That was the main reason for me buying mine... the same as the hoover preset (well its not named hoover, its called 'what the?') was the primary reason for buying my alpha juno 2- which is a really evil synth once you learn how to program it

thanks for the advice thier matey. will look into links given and see what happens.it may seem a poinless task trying to make sounds that are considerd old school.

the truth is he wrote the music in reason, but on the final mixdown in logic he used his old analog gear for alot of the sounds. he could not be happy with the bass especialy reason could make, but he loved what scream distortion could do with vocals and drums. so at the end he only used reason samplers, redrum and scream. all synths was old analog gear on that CD (always outnumbered)

Yeah, and the scary thing is, there was a lot of behringer kit (I mean a shit load) in his studio for all these albums!
