Hockey Night in Canada Theme Finals:

Hear the Submissions

The final 5 submissions are now up, professionally produced by Bob Rock. Although nothing will ever replace the original song, its fun hearing the 'could be' new theme.

Track #1 and #4 are my personal favs.

#1 is very catchy and i like the guitar hook...only gripe is the ending is pretty weak.

#4 starts out slow, but has a catchy theme. The ending is very strong from :41 on, and I think that makes it a better choice, since you need the theme to conclude with a lot of energy pre-game.

CBC still massively fail for letting go of the classic theme. This competition for a new anthem has been some of the worst PR I've seen in ages.

All five are horrible if you ask me.

I like #4 the best, I also love how #2 was made by like a 14 year old. Good for him!

agreed! Definitely a good effort, just not enough punch to be the pick. It reminds me of myself at that age though. Around 13 i'd be sitting at the old apartment sized piano, and trying to make catchy melodies. It must be amazing for him to hear his piano theme performed by a group of session musicians.

I'm not miserable, I just get frustrated with moron executives like the ones who apparently run the CBC's sports department. They almost fired Craig Maclean a few years ago over money, they continue to obsess about who Don Cherry might offend, they fired Chris Cuthbert during the lockout (I can name about ten CBC sportscasters who I'd have fired before him!) and now this hockey anthem debacle.

They have probably already paid more in advertising this stupid and unnecessary competition than if they had just increased the royalties to the original song writer. It didn't take CTV long to swoop in and get the rights did it?

Loves this competition!

The new revamped songs dont sound anything like the original submissions thus leading me to change my original vote.

I originally was all about #5 but I now I guess I would have to say #4 sounds the most suited- although it reminds me so much of the original hockey night in canada theme song.

This is such an exciting opportunity for anyone and im so into finding out who will take the win.

Don't really like any of them.

4 is alright since there MUST be a winner

I love the original

deadmau5 dropped the ball by not entering a tune. what a lazy fuck

Posted by Owen M on Oct-06-2008 22:48:

the original is classic...but really, who gives? it's just an intro song to a hockey game.

#4 has that "classic" feel of the original.
#2 sounds like porn music when it breaks at the 22 second mark.

Classic vs. Porn...too hard to choose.

it didn't need to change though. All CBC had to do was open their wallets a little more to keep everything running efficiently with the theme that people recognise. They dropped the ball big time, but it's not the first or last time they'll get hammered in the PR field.

Anyway, going on those five options, I will now probably do what I do when I watch Sunday night football and NBC's awful theme tune comes on; I turn it over for a a minute or two.

I stopped listenning after the 3rd one... that repetitive commercial is fcuking anoying.

Posted by Owen M on Oct-06-2008 23:00:

you're right, it didn't need to change. But I don't ever remembr saying "Lets go watch H.N.I.C. to hear the dopest intro theme song!!!" It usually had to do with watching Hockey...and Grapes on coaches corner. You better not talk when he's on, or you'll get something thrown at you.

In 1 year from now you would've completely forgotten about the old classic HNIC theme song.

it's going to be used on CTV (and hence Rogers Sportsnet and TSN!) quite regularly actually so technically it won't be forgotten. I see what you're saying, but I would have avoided the PR mess by just keeping the theme on CBC. It's just another example in bad judgement from CBC Sports.

lol. i like them all.

Posted by Dr. DAS on Oct-07-2008 15:53:

I voted #5, liked the celtic theme.

Too many of them sound too close to the original theme...if you're going to change it (which they shouldn't have) you might as well go a whole new direction.

Just not as far as that Ross Gellar special...

Posted by Ania_xox on Oct-07-2008 16:01:

#1 no. it sounds like the theme song for "Saved by the Bell goes to the Casino"

#2 is definitely my fave if they get rid of that ghey punch at the end

#3 reminds me of the Mighty Ducks movie for some reason, therefore, no. this is hockey night in CANADIANA... nice guitar riff at the end though

#4 sounds like an african tribe song at the beginning... other than that it's catchy... can't picture myself in front of the TV thursday night though listening to this one

#5 gave me chills lol. not the right feel for weekend hockey... it's more like a "omg moral victory and everyone is crying"
