Serato and laptop

Hey this may seem like a stupid question but i have very little experience involving this.
What is the main purpose for using Serato and a laptop with a bedroom dj set-up?
Is it just that some people enjoy it more? does it actually serve a good purpose for a bedroom set up? I just dont realy know what it is used for..

Can someone please explain?
Thanks

For using music from your computer and if you are too lazy to burn CDs.

I kinda echo that, but just not the 'lazy' part.

Currently, I just use Traktor at home in my 'studio' (spare room, where the cats eat and shit) to audition tracks and just work out what I'm going to be playing - then everything I know I might play gets transferred onto CD - and I rock up to a club with my Slappa cases filled with CD's and use their CDJ's.

Why not use Traktor live at a club? 1) Not all the clubs have an infra-structure to un-hook their kit, and hook in the Audio-8 - and 2) I just don't trust Windows not to crash!

When I do seriously consider doing this, it'll be when 1) More clubs have a breakout hookup for the audio hardware - and 2) I've bought a Macbook Pro.

So, short answer - a) So I don't have to waste loads of CD's - and b) So I can still use vinyl as opposed to always using CDJ's. (I do use Traktor Scratch with Traktor 3 though, so I can use the 2 x 1210's and 2 x CDJ1000's with it, rather than one or other.

Its easy because you dont have to dig for where your CD is with this tune in this book. You just have it all right there.

Its expecially handy if your playing a club or a party as you just bring your whole collection on a hard drive. Plug up whatever program you use and have at it.

Its more of a convience than anything. But there are more than a few "DJ's" that will spin peoples tunes that they illegally downloaded from the internet... which I do not care for. If its a paid gig your getting money for someones elses work without giving them credit (financially). Hense why alot of old school heads have a big problem with it. It takes away from searching and digging for that 1 record instead of just hopping on Limewire and grabbing it in 15 seconds.

It's also made for use with a digital controller like the Vestax VCI or the Stanton SC.
