what kind of music would you play in the context of between some cool rock bands?

I used to hang out with my buddy's band and I just ended up playing some of my original productions... really, as long as it isn't too "hardcore" or "cheesy" you can get away with just about anything since you'll only be playing for 20 minutes at a time while the bands are setting up. In hindsight, probably deep house or big beat stuff depending on the venue/styles played there.

Big Beat is probably more on track. Stuff from Crystal Method and Chemical Brothers, some Prodigy. You can find a few with guitar riffs here and there. I'd say that's your best bet.
