Who isn't a perfectionist?

It seems to me that most people consider themselves to be a perfectionist. In job interviews, I heard a reporter once say, it was the best 'bad thing' one could have. But, personally, I don't think being a perfectionist is a good thing at all: I often see talented people never getting anything done because it's never good enough.

I've been trying to get rid of perfectionism myself for quite a while, as it is deeply embedded in my worldview because of the way I was raised. Hell, we do live in a competitive society, and being the best is seen as some kind of ultimate goal. Ironically, in spite of my efforts, I haven't achieved perfection in my quest for non-perfectionism (I can't even write a poorly formatted post and let it be ), but I really need to snap out of it.

What about you? What are your views on perfectionism? Are you a perfectionist?

Posted by Frenchie on Oct-08-2008 19:34:

Far from being perfect.

I think the definition of a "perfectionist" is different to everyone, too.

Edit - I'm perfect.

Me. Fuck that shit. I actually thrive with a desk that is fucking chaos to everyone but myself. I can't fucking work in a sterile, perfectly organized area.

What do you mean, Frenchie?

Oh, my desk is anything but tidy. That I can assure you

(and my apartment isn't any better... tidiness is not among my top priorities)

My living space is usually pretty clean. Not clean freak clean, but things picked up, dishes done or at most a couple in the sink from that day, garbage not overflowing, bathroom cleaned up, etc.

loaded question.

kinda like:

are you in denial?

Mine isn't: My studies are my top priority, and work comes next. I only do the dishes before going to bed (and if I've got enough time, that is, otherwise I just let it sit on the sink), and I cleaned my apartment up just a couple of times last month.

lol crazy. I can't handle that. I have to keep things picked up and the dishes done. I don't like my place to look too unkempt.

edit//oh and things that are too perfect fucking bother me.

I consider myself quite imperfect but I expect my work (papers, research, products of my time and energy) to be perfect.

Too many people are not conscientious. They do things wrong and don't care.

My studies and work (research and development) are my top priority also but I can't live in a pigpen. I need things organized and clean because then it seems my mind is able to relax and focus on what is important.

Posted by Ted Promo on Oct-08-2008 19:52:

I'm most definitely not a perfectionist. I lean far more as a half-aainist.

Posted by squirrelly on Oct-08-2008 19:52:

neat freak? yes.

perfectionist? eeeeeeeeeeeeeeh sometimes. I don't like to stress out, and being a perfectionist is nothing but stress. Plus I realized I'm usually happier when I'm not worried about perfection, and just let things happen

Posted by barbina on Oct-08-2008 19:55:

I'm far from a perfectionist. I usually get halfway through something and then I'm done with it

Funny how I need things scattered all over the room for the exact same reason.

I feel everything goes to their natural state after a while (i.e. the papers are where I need them and so on). I even tried to give organisation a try, and I even posted a thread about it but... meh... can't be arsed to put it all back in the drawer when I know I'm going to use most of it in the next couple of days

See for me it is more like, if I am going to use it a few times today, it stays out. If I know I won't use it the rest of the day, put it away.

Posted by squirrelly on Oct-08-2008 20:14:

The only thing I'm a perfectionist about is my writing.

Posted by Mr.Mystery on Oct-08-2008 20:16:

I'd be a perfectionist if I wasn't so damn lazy.

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, because (as pointed out) I'd never get anything done.

Posted by Slylee on Oct-08-2008 20:25:

uh i'm definitely NOT a perfectionist in the work place, and i never say that on an interview lol

u should see my desk right now. there's a method to my madness though i swear.

Posted by lcid on Oct-08-2008 20:40:

i'm definitely a perfectionist when it comes to my work. i'm rarely 100% satisfied with my finished product, and if i feel like i'm missing the creative spark when i'm working on something, it just gets me down and makes it even more of a challenge (and not a fun one).

it's kind of a double-edged sword though, for 2 reasons -- one, perfection in graphic design and art can be very subjective - while one person may think something is "perfect," i might think that it's total crap. two, i strive for perfection, yet being perfect suggests that i don't need to grow or improve. so i take my ups and downs as they come and try my hardest to remember that there's always something to be taken away from every project, whether i'm satisfied or dissatisfied with it.

one of my favorite quotes re: perfection, "creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. art is knowing which ones to keep."

i also like equal parts ingredients in every bite of my sammiches and hamburgers.

I don't have time to be a perfectionist. Anyone who thinks they are a perfectionist at work tends just to be riddled with self doubt and a stench of inertia.

Posted by Slylee on Oct-08-2008 22:01:

i definitely think anyone involved in the arts will be a perfectionist in the work place. it's hard to explain and i don't feel like trying but it's just a little different than someone in a regular office type setting job/career.

i'm kinda with dervish about not having time to be a perfectionist. the law firm i work at is high volume and fast paced and i barely have time to get a moment to myself during the day, let alone be a perfectionist about being organized, etc... i have a few screw ups with files here and there but none of them are major fuckups and if i wasn't that busy or interrupted every 2 seconds by the phone or my boss or the new girl asking me how to do something, then i probably wouldn't make those fuckups. there's no room for perfectionism at my office unless we hire like 5 more people lol

Great thread, Lira. I can relate with how you feel, I've found myself in similar situations where I've felt the urge to be a perfectionist, to be 'the best', and so on and so forth. I think the sooner you realize that 'success' is not the 'end-result', but the journey from point A to Point B, you'll realize that perfection seldom occurs and most of the time, unexpected behavior and a sequence of unexpected events will form & shape the imperfections that make life, well, perfect (of course, I'm a positive thinker!)

Posted by Floorfiller on Oct-19-2008 15:56:

I 'm unfortunately a pretty hardcore perfectionist :/

I am pretty sure there are different types of perfectionism, I am the type that if I can't do something to the standard I set for myself, I just end up not doing it. It pretty much sucks. Combine that with a thousand different interests pulling me in different directions it can be a very difficult struggle getting the things I want accomplished. It is something I work on, but I think it's just a part of my personality.

same here... it looks like am F-5 tornado ripped through my office, but dammit, I know where everything is and the organized chaos just works for me. Who knows if this is true, but I read recently that a disorganized desk keeps people more tuned on the job because you HAVE to focus more on where everything is

I feel the exact same way- very fast paced at the club- So much shit to accomplish during job hours that if I fuck something up, we just fix it and move on. If we had another couple staff and responsibility was shared, would be different. Usually my fuckups don't amount to money lost, and hey, my boss knew he hired me with no real office/accounting experience, so with that in mind I rock my job and at least now employees get paid on time!

Posted by Silky Johnson on Oct-19-2008 16:48:

Not a perfectionist but I do strive for the best that I know I'm capable of. I think the key thing is knowing which things are worth getting upset over and which aren't. A.K.A., don't sweat the small stuff.
