LA Weekly Detour Festival (October 4, 2008) Mini-review

I don't have the time to write a full review, so here's an abbreviated one:

Much smaller crowd than last year. I'd presume because of the headliners were a bit weaker, and the prices were $7+ more than last year.
Taking the red line to the venue is the way to go.
Instead of cash, you had to get a smart card ($10 & $20 increments only), and use that to buy stuff. Then, before you left, you had to get a refund. I was lucky not to wait in line, but I could easily seeing that being a clusterfck.

The Mae Shi - A complete waste of time.

Datarock - Fun and entertaining for an hour.

Bitter:Sweet - Fantastic live. Played for about 40 people, so it was like they were in a small venue rocking it out. They have such depth to their songs, and their singer (Shana Halligan) is fantastic. (Kiran Shahani was a member of Supreme Beings of Leisure as well).

Hercules and Love Affair - Their two singers are quite different: one is a lesbian elf, and the other is a hot-european chick. However, they can both sing. Unfortunately, their set had a bunch of problems: went on 10 minutes late due to sound problems; drum kit didn't have pads, so they couldn't use it; the main speakers went out during the set for a couple of minutes. Alas, with all these problems, it was a great rocking set. They played all of their songs back to back (no breaks), which made it very easy to dance to.

Cut/Copy - Very good, and I had a lot of fun at their show. Brought on the same lights (LCDs) as the night before, and that made a good light show. Only played their hits, and did not play any deeper songs as they did on Friday.

The Presets - Not as good as their set on Friday (see below), but definitely rocked it. Was shorter and the songs they did play were in the same order.

I did not spend any time in the DJ area; every time I walked by, they were playing electro.

I left around 10:45p, caught the Red line and went back to rest as I'm still recovering from my surgery.
Was definitely fun, but the festival is better with your friends There is a couple of beer gardens in the festival (soju & beer), so you can see some of the stages while drinking. Much better than Coachella and APW.

I also saw The Presets & Cut/Copy again (previously?) Friday night in Pomona at the Glass House. Heartbreak opened (boring). The Presets were beyond fantastic. Cut/Copy was outstanding and played an awesome set.
I recommend seeing both of them live sometime if you can.
