BEYER KILLED IT!!!!!
Damn that was good and exactly what I was hoping for. After so much minimal over the last year seeing Heather last week and Beyer last night was perfect.
I've said it many times before in reviews and last night proved it to me once again, the Mirror Ballroom is by far my favorite room in Toronto. It's the perfect size, set up, and the sound is good. Cox would be so much better in the Ballroom instead of the mainroom.
Line: Barely
Crowd: Happy, energetic
Elbowroom (pre-last-call): Moderate
Chin-stroking: Only at the beginning
Beats: Devastating
Floors: Slippery
Exhaustion: Total
Regrets: None
Only complaint is the lights - strobes are great for like, 10 to 30 seconds at a time, not for the entire night. Give our poor eyes a break!
It was good meeting you Cribby, I was that brown guy with the plaid shirt. You were dancing up a storm lol. But it was hard not to. The music was perfect, some really good techno beats, really fluid all the way through. There was a good crowd there too, even in all the other rooms. Willcall worked smoothly. Both Beyer and Mull played really well.
Text from Cribby makes me think this may be my biggest regret yet of 2008
Yay. Dammit. lol
Just what the doctor ordered
I've never had a bad time at Circa... With all it's little nooks and crannies, and themed rooms, I can easily call it one of my favourite venues. I couldn't deal with the complex itself yesterday though: The other party they were having in the main room was scary! I LOVE the ballroom. It was secluded from everything else and it had the perfect atmosphere for a techno party. It was creepy-dark in there.. with the occasional blinding strobe lights every now and then (still wasn't as intense as in other clubs.) I came to the agreement with someone that techno crowds are late bloomers. The place was fairly empty when I got there at 10:45 up until 12:00 am. From then on it got packed almost to the tits, with just enough room to kick it. Techno girls <3 Energy levels were dead up until just after 1 am when the zombies finally woke up... and then they tore that place up. Skyrocketing comes to mind.
Nitin's opener consisted of laidback minimal and tech house. It was slow and set the mood to drink and relax. It's hard to get a crowd going when there is no crowd yet. There were a couple of fun tracks that he dropped that made me spill a few on me... Thx Nitin!
Metalogic brought the vibe up a notch, but the crowd was still being lazy. Always love watching Kidd play, and when he's playing in Metalogic they always take you for a trip. A bit slower than the last couple of times I've heard them, but they never fail to surprise me with some of their haunting productions. Serious business. I had to stop some conversations midway because it was pretty intense.
Joel Mull took the stage shortly after (can't remember the time) and at first he was pretty dull. I was waiting for my delivery the whole night, and although I had my servings of appetizers, it wasn't enough to satisfy my hunger! After 20 minutes or so into his set, everything had turned 180. The sound increasingly got louder, people were moving, and the place was packed. Suddenly he starts dropping these fierce techno bombs from no where! Unexpected for sure, and the crowd ate it up; everyone accelerated and started givin' er. I love my minimal and all, but this was refreshing to hear. Some of these tunes were so good that they left me breathless. Damn. This continued on for the next couple of hours.
As if Adam Beyer could keep it up... but he did. Surprise? No way.. I knew he was still capable of delivering. In fact, he somehow took it to higher levels of speed and hardness. He was killing us with that hard driving sound... my engine was overheating!
He still has an honourable spot as one of my top 5 favourites. Only minor complaint was that I don't think I heard any of his productions, sadly. But the stormers that he continues with made me forget.
They were going at it back 2 back for the last bit, and their mixing was retardedly good. Didn't hear any fuckups all night. As the crowd died out after 3:30 or so, they finally brought their set down. They were playing tech house, and I even heard some tribal influenced drums in there somewhere. It was different... I could have dealt without it honestly, but it was a good closing sound. Some grooviness and even snake charming sounds were heard. They ended almost up until 5 am, and it's easy to say that everyone left smiling. Couldn't ID too many tracks, but one of the two dropped
Matt Nordstrom - Lucky Drawl (This one's for you Knox!)
It was a memorable night, and one of the better of the year for sure, albeit it ending early-ish. I was too drained by the end and decided to just go home and sleep. There was talk of Beyer playing at an afterparty but I'm not sure if it happened or not.
One more thing.. there were some VERY interesting characters in there
. I put on Nata's eyepatch for a while and wanted to make them walk the plank...but we decided to just swipe them away with our techno swiffers. lol. Kudos to the girl dancing with an injured foot on crutches. She was a rockstar!
Thx to Platform crew for another solid booking.
Last but not least...this was a successful chapter of..
I LOVE MY LIFE 2008!!!

LOVES IT!
alright, time for a better review :P
Was one of the first ppl arriving at circa after going to dinner @ Steak on richmond...which is nowhere as good The Bifteque was when I went there 3 years ago...shoulda gone to Ruth's chris!
Being my first time at circa, I was anxious to see the place. We got in the ballroom in no time. The place is well sized, minimal lighting and pretty good sound (when you are in the middle)
Nittin was playing some chill minimal which I quite enjoyed. Good way to relax before the madness. I wandered around a bit while he was playing. They had some band playing in the main room, lupe fiasco or something the like. Even tho it wasnt my cup of tea, it was pretty good. People down there were eatin it and it was full (11pm!)
Wandered more with Cribby and in the washroom bad, some chick g'd out or whatnot..and of course the bouncer was pretty small and was having troubles bringing her out of there....ended up picking her like a bag of potatoes and off he went. pretty funny in a way!
with all the nooks and crannies in Circa, it must be a nightmare to manage people! wouldnt want to be down there on a top40 night!
Back to the ballroom, Metalogic/Kidd were playing some good techno tunes. had the crowd going hard at times..then went off in tangents. I found their set to be up and down. The place took a while to fill up!
Mull started playing at around 1-130 if I recall right. As cribby said, the first 20 mins were ok, and then he went full on to prep up for Beyer. They started using the light system when he was playing. Those are definite seizure machines! It was too intense and i was sober! I ended up dancing facing away from the front from a while. Lots of pple were complaining about the lights! Then they finally toned it down. Note to self for the future, bring sunglasses to Circa! Mull played for 1hour or so, then it was Beyer.
Beyer, was uhmmm....sick! he was banging and relentless from the moment he started till i left...i expect he was the same till the end!
I wish he'd play some his tunes like A,B,C,D, Bangbop, puckelbop..
Overall, I liked the ballroom's dark feeling for a techno night (minus the lighting at one point). The sound system was pretty darn good in the middle, other areas....it was average. Didn't have to use my plugs at all
However, the room certainly didn't have the vibe Footwork has on Platform nights. Red bull's were not overpriced like most places!
Thanks to everyone for the bday wishes. Alex, we want details about the other DJ for Halloween.
Were Mull/Beyer's sets recorded??

I really enjoyed both Beyer & Mull. I wanted hard, and they certainly delivered. It was a fun night, but the crowd wasn't into it enough.

| Originally posted by DigiNut It's a little disorienting. When I walked in it was pitch-black, I was stumbling all over the place trying to find my way around (no I wasn't drunk). Then, just when my eyes were finally getting used to the darkness, wham, friggin' 10 megawatts machine-gunned straight at me. |
