REVIEW: CiRCA 1 year w/ Roger Sanchez and Victor Calderone

Wow simply WOW!
Got there at 3 am to catch Victor Calderone and im so glad i made the trek up to toronto!

As soon i got in, i could hear the thumping basslines and the drums! His set was definitely tribal! He played hard from 3-6, not sure when he stopped.

The soundsystem was perfect for tribal! I felt like I was at Stereo <3

I think overall I would have been more pissed at missing calderone than beyer, thats how good last night was !!

Ran in tons of familiar faces last nite, Sarah, stefan, cribby, maggie, Pat, Knox, RJ and others

Was nice seeing Knox dance last nite lol

Circa, please bring the drums back to toronto on a consistent basis.

Loved almost all of it except for the last hour of Sanchez' set. It was weird, like super up-tempo tribal tech and not in a good way. But D&P did a great techy, funky opener, Roger was busting out the classics for a good while, and although I unfortunately had to leave fairly early, I was actually pleasantly surprised by Calzone, who was giving us the full-on New York tech treatment with some occasional tribal mixed in.

Great tunes (almost) all night, and as always, thanks to the troopers for making the overall night as good as it was.

P.S. Oh dear lord the lights... I don't think I've left any other club with my eyes hurting more than my ears. Next time I'm bringing shades, I don't care how sketchy it looks.

interesting.. i find the guv to be far more illuminated, to an almost uncomfortable feel. however it has never bothered me to the point where i feel the need to bring shades. im am certainly not a fan of bright lights or even lasers for that matter. when it comes to lights/lasers i feel as though less can often be more.

personally i don't think the party started until calderone came on. He really delivered. This performance was superior to his first at circa IMO.

Really enjoyed the club (as usual). Cant wait to see what cox will do.

wow. well i guess my view of the night was completely different then everybody else's.

i thought sanchez did an amazing job. especially in the last hour of his set! i was very happy that he stayed away from his commercial sound. he did play a couple old remix's though.

i've seen calderone numerous times and i would say that was the least impressed i've been with him. i even saw him in montreal in august and he did 10x better there. i don't know what it was. between 5 and 6 he started banging out some much harder stuff. i was loving it, but my body couldn't move anymore after doing oktoberfest the night before and then getting destroyed by sanchez. so we bailed right before 6. i'm guessing he only got better from there though.

it was my first time at circa and i was very impressed as most of you already are. it's pretty easy to lose yourself in all the different rooms and the layout is amazing. i'm looking forward to the next tribal booking they bring in.

there was plenty of drums in the set. I think you are allergic to tribal for some reason and dont want to acknowledge his set was quite tribally.

last nite was quite the circuit party! yet dudes were still trying to hit on my gf lol At least i didnt get on (unlike cribby by an old dood) lol

Just because there is some percussion in the tech he was playing, doesn't mean it was tribal.

Go on beatport, and search Victor Calderone's chart. He played all the tracks from his chart last night. Tell me how many tribal tracks you see on there.

Calderone has been a god in Toronto for 10+ years, that's why the older crowd comes out.

there were quite a bit of bears in the crowd, but they were outnumbered by 20-30 yr old gay people. 90% of the crowd down in the pit was guys.

didnt mind tho, felt like i was @ Stereo, good times

It almost felt like Stereo. The only thing is when Calderone shut down last night he would be "starting" at Stereo to go until noon.

But it was a great party. Calderone was really impressed by the set last night.

Went for Sanchez and left a fan of calderone. He played some sick heavy stuff that I can see deko-ze playing at the zone. Awesome tunes!

anyone have pics/vids?

definitely. I was comparing the sound to stereo mostly. on the floor, the sound was crisp, no plugs needed. I could have gone for a few more hours of this goodness!

id like to see circa have thei10-3 parties then do after-hours to fill the void of system soundbar and Sonic...so we dont have to drive to MTL for such a feel!

Yeah, the sound was crazy. CiRCA has a very underrated soundsystem.

Sarah and I arrived at Circa around 11:30 and were amazed at how quickly we got in, searched and passes! Under 10 minutes for sure!

Just got in when Sanchez started and was surprised to hear him play drummy tech for the first 30 min! I thought he would play a lot more commercial and electro house but thank god he left most of that behind and brought his a-game!! He had me going for a good hour then suddenly started playing some more corny tracks but still kept his set going good until the end.

By the time I knew it, Calderone had come on! First couple tracks were kinda mediocre and slow but after the first hour he started slamming some dark tech. Got more tribally towards the end for sure, around 445am he was relentless!!!!! Definately had flashbacks of Stereo at the back of the dancefloor, the soundsystem is really top notch! Crystal clear, driving basslines mmmmmmmmmmmmm

For my first time experiencing Calderone I would have to give him an 8/10, and I will definately have to check him out in MTL in the next year!

Had a blast partying with all of you!

Fuck yeah! The basslines were crazy last night. Victor took a while to warm up, but when he got going, it was retardo in there. What a great party.

Loved the first 1/2 of Sanchez's set but he totaly lost me around 1:30. Hung around until around 2:30 when cell phone hell in Circa (texting, drunk, not being able to hear) caused me to leave in a rush thinking something happened to a friend.

Glad people had a good time since we will all benefit if there is some healthy competition with Guv. If Calzone was playing in the Ballroom I might have gone back in.

BTW - checked out Aquaviva in the Ballroom and he was killing it for the 15 minutes I was there...too bad it was less than 1/2 full.

It is interesting to hear the Guv 12 year was empty as well. Let's see how the next few months play out.

dekoze was craazzzzzyyy @ zone... started with dekoze tribal at like 134 bpm bouncing like crazy and kinda tapered off later

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY HELLOOOOOOOOO THERE!!!!!!!

Although I would've enjoyed seeing Calderone in mirror ballroom (which might I add is my fave room in Circa), I think the way he played last night (big room dark/tech sound) was 100% suitable for main room.

I will never ever forget Tom Stephan (Superchumbo) in ballroom, that was a fucking RETARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDED good night, peak hour Superchumbo is fucking nuts, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH~!

I was in the Ballroom and I got to hear Stimming - The Anger --- I was happy

Agreed. Sanchez stole the show for me. Fucking TRIBAL. Calderone's big room tech sound was enjoyable, but not refreshing enough... not very original.

Sanchez. First time seeing him play and I was truly impressed. Not a fan of party tunes, but he changed my view on that Sunday night. Non stop dancing till about 2:30, when all I wanted was Victor to come on. I had a one track mind at that point and that is who I wanted to see.

When he came on, man did he deliver. I felt the set was quite different than Montreal this past summer, but I still enjoyed what I heard. I have wanted to see a late night Calderone set for some time now. Techyyes later turning to pure ReTaRdEdNeSs! Near the end of the night when I felt like I was gonna fall over, we were straight at the back of the main room. Im not a fan of the main dancefloor, dont know why, but something about it for me. However, between 5-6am, I was dead centre in the back of the room, those red lights behind the dj boothand all I could think about was Stereo. The sound was so crisp and clearthe vibe.Victor took me to another place. Great time at Circa. Lets see what Carl can do to that main room.
