Mixer Volume Meters

dont know if its my crappy mixer or not but this has happened a couple of times. i finish a transition which is imo pretty smooth and when i look at the volume meter on my mixer its at a level a couple of bars below the volume that i had started mixing with. is the volume meter always right and thus your guide volume-wise or do you sometimes not trust it and go with what your ears tell you?

You need to make sure the gain/trim on your incoming track is set correctly. The gain knob makes sure that the two separate mix sources are at the same volume. Just because the faders are both at 100% doesn't mean that the tracks will be the same volume.

Steps:

1. Song A is playing.

2. Start song B, the incoming track, playing in your cans and make sure it is the only track playing in there.

3. Fast forward to a "busy" part of the song with full melody, bass and percussion playing.

4. Look at the "cue volume" meter on your mixer and make sure the lights are peaking at 0db or just under.

5. Cue song B and start mixing in.

6. Repeat.

Just watch out when you're playing both songs out at full volume you'll get a slight increase in your meters as two songs are playing fully now. Instead when bringing up the Cued track take the one that's playing out down just a tiny bit. Depending on the curve of your faders (how sharp the volume drops off)

Always keep an eye on your meters.

It's something i absolutely love on my 92, each channel has it's own meters. Great for keeping levels spot on..
