Angry new macbooks no FW

There are new macbooks out now. Everything is fine but... macbooks don't have firewire port i thought to buy this and keep some money, but dont' believe in USB audio interfaces...sad.

The 13 inch doesn't have firewire, but the 15 inch one has a FW800 port.

yea i know, pros are way too expensive, but its the way to go.

I was trying to explain to my friend today that logic can only run on a mac. But he brought up a pretty good point, since the mac runs on an intel processor shouldn't there be way to have logic 8 on a pc?

I just thought it was somewhat interesting, not sure of what would be entailed or why logic is mac only as im a PC user.
Maybe a mac user can clear this up?

Apple, ingeniously, bought Emagic - the creators of Logic. Therefore Logic has been mac only since 5.5 or so.

You can run logic on pc, if you install a patched version of mac os - on a compatible pc.
I installed it on my dell 9400 laptop, and due to som issues with dell's bios on these specific laptops,
I could only run mac os with only one of the cpu cores enabled.
Even so, it worked quite well. But since I couldn't get my wifi working,
and the fact that I could only run one of the cores made it unattractive for me.
If you have a pc with all compatible parts, it should run osx about as good as a mac. (if you get all the necessary drivers)
Logic worked well, besides all the bugs it initially had with it's 8.0.0 release.
I did this just to see if Logic was something I would consider spending my money on, and soon after I ordered a mac mini.
The mini has enough power for me, since I'm not used to much cpu power, I know the workarounds.
Soon I'm selling the mini, in favor of the new mac pro that's (hopefully) around the corner.

I tried the same thing, only couldn't get OSX to boot on my system. So you are making the switch over? You liked it that much? Compared to what may I ask? What were you using before? (as a sequencer I mean)

I couldn't care less about Apple's new lineup.
Get those refurbished previous generation MBPs while you can.

Is it just me or is the only half-decent software for a mac only made by apple? Where are the other big software companies?

Making stuff for the 95% of other people who don't use Macs...

Install OSX on your PC. That is what I did before I bought a macbook.

I was using cubase sx3 before. I was getting tired of it's layout,
with windows poping up for every little thing. I really liked the single window layout of logic, and the quality of it's plugins.
I still have a windows pc for my office programs, and general use,
but for music, mac is my new choice.

It run some games smoother, but it still isn't a gaming rig.

what 15 inch? only find the pro in 15inch

hows the internal soundcard?

Posted by Beyer on Oct-17-2008 11:08:

I think he was referring to the new macbooks, not the pros.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Oct-17-2008 13:18:

the new macbooks aint 15" nor have firewire so he must have been talking about the pros.

Posted by Beyer on Oct-17-2008 13:51:

I meant that the 13 inch he was referring to, was the macbook - obviously.

Here! Here!

Also, the previous generation of 17" macbook pros are still available...

...assuming you have 3 grand.

Posted by flutlicht junky on Oct-19-2008 19:22:

There is a white macbook still available w/ firewire, it's 2.1 ghz and you could upgrade to 160gb hdd and add 4gb of ram from crucial would give a powerful machine for just over 800

Posted by Stevemarble on Oct-20-2008 05:50:

what are peoples opinions on a 15" MBP. Not sure if 15" provides enough real estate. will check the store in a few days.

It does look puny, I admit that, but its great actually! I have the 1.83ghz core duo version, and it works great for me.
It scores 2335 on geekbench, and here is the results, if youre interested in comparing it with something else.

Integer: 2003

Floating point:3284

Memory: 1676

Stream: 1496

I did this while having firefox open, but I guess it doesnt matter much.
