First DJ setup ever

What do I need? What can I do with $500? I want to mix cd's. The purpose of this is I want to start making extra money on the side DJing weddings and birthdays, and I've already got a gig for one of my high school friend's wedding. So I need a setup.

Posted by elFreak on Oct-16-2008 18:38:

you need to learn how to use the search function to start.

topic covered ad nauseum.

for weddings an stuff, you might want to think about something laptop based. That way you have your entire music library with you, and its cheaper. and yes, search is your homeboy.

here is a nice modest beginner setup

you know, rookie shit

$500 isnt going to get you anywhere.... basic CDJs are almost 500 each anyways...

btw how did you already get gigs if you havent even started DJing...?

if you have a laptor you might as well just buy a mixing program like traktor or something, its pretty cheap

otherwise I would say 2X CDJ200s, and a basic 2 channel mixer, plus headphones... try to get it used... will still be mroe than $500 unless you find a sweeeeet deal

Oh yea...I'm going to buy a laptop. I'm already practicing using Traktor DJ Studio. I tried to look through the tutorials you guys have here, and I didn't find anything on the "first DJ setup". I have a gig because, first, the wedding is 2 years away, second, I offered to do it for free, as long as they paid for my plane ticket. It'll be like a visit to all my friends back in Florida.

You can DJ a wedding with WinAmp and a microphone.

Why would you begin looking for gigs before getting a setup?

Posted by elFreak on Oct-17-2008 06:51:

because he is krypton.

my guess is that he is not looking for a setup and just wanted to create a thread.

DJM 400 + 2 CDJ 200s

Posted by blacknoizybox on Oct-17-2008 09:54:

i thought only the newcomers would ask such questions..
it's a joke thread, ain't it??

LOL @ the Xone:4D recommendation? how much is that one like $3000? My God though it's probably the best Midi controller out there. I'd one up you guys and set a fucking sack full of cats on fire for one! I'd also be doing the city a big favor

This isnt a cheap hobby by any means. The best thing i can say for you to do is find 2 of the cheapest turntables (your limited to vinal on this one. CD tables are never that low) you can possibly locate and some incredibly bargain basement 2 channel mixer if you wanna try under 500 bucks. They sell a few starter kits that should get you around 500 bucks.

But alas the nagging question is WHAT THE FUCK are you thinking taking a gig without 1 bit of equipment!!?? I really hope you dont hope to hook it up and it instantly click in your head how to perfectly beatmatch to the point everyone is looking at you with a WTF Mate.

LOL! The gig is in two years m8ate. I've got plenty of time to learn it all.

I'm going to buy a really cheap laptop loaded up with traktor dj studio. 500 watt amp. And some good speakers. I should be fine with that right?
