Dunno Why do more educated people have fewer kids?

It is a well-known sociological fact that the higher your education level, the less likely you are to have a large number of children. This holds for entire countries as well -- more educated ones generally have lower birth rates -- and it shows an especially impressive correlation with the education level of women in particular. That is, countries where women have free access to all levels of education and are encouraged to use it to pursue job opportunities are much less likely to have high birth rates.

Why is this?

Posted by Frenchie on Oct-16-2008 22:31:

Because they are educated.

So, what are you saying? That wanting more kids is a result of ignorance?

Posted by trunks1022 on Oct-16-2008 22:32:

because smart women don't need to produce babies to get ahead in life

It almost sounds like the question was answered by itself.

Not really, though. Obviously there is a correlation, but I am wondering why the correlation exists at all. Rephrasing:

Why does education make people want to have fewer kids?

More like HAVING more kids is a result of ignorance, not WANTING.

No. It was more of a smart ass comment more than anything.

There are a few possibilities. One being that people who are not so educated probably have a regular run of the mill job that doesn't require more than your average 9-5 and no bringing your work home = more time for kids = are having more kids for money. People that are highly educated probably have a high scale job which needs more attention and demands more time = no time for kids.

Educated people feel their lives have more meaning than just procreating. They usually focus on their goals and then worry about starting a family.

So the uneducated people just never learned how to use birth control? I guess "accidental kids" can account for part of the discrepancy at least...

Uneducated women use kids to collect money from the government.

Good point. Based on what I have read, education also correlates well with a woman's age at the birth of her first child.

This is partly true, at least what I've seen in countries like mine (yes, my shithole is worse than yours Mr. Biden, lol). Also, poor, uneducated people have more children because they put them to work at a young age to generate more income to the household. They have the mentality that more children = more money. Sadly, that is not the case. These children go to work instead of being at school (getting education) thus creating a vicious cycle.

better educated people have sex less often. less frequent sex = fewer kids (assuming no great difference in birth control, though there may be one). the question, rather, is why educated people have less sex. the answer is they have more demanding jobs, resulting in less free time and more stress.

I heard some study on just that a few months ago.

Looks like plenty of info that correlates to others posts. I think we covered most of the bases overall

Yep, I was going to post pretty much exactly what you have said. Higher education usually equates to a career where you have to devote much more time to the position. Having children & raising them requires a lot of devotion of time.

I could see the likely hood of less educated women, being stay-at-home wives/mothers is greater, due to not having a real career to be qualified for.
