Giving kids more responsibility

What if kids could, at age fourteen, legally drop out of school, be kicked out of their parents' house, be held responsible for crimes, and work?

Would they act more responsibly and mature earlier on?

[Note: I am not talking about lowering the age of consent.]

Did you just delete this thread and remake it?

No, I changed the stipulations so as not to include a lowered age of consent, diminishing the likelihood that the new thread would be dominated by horny idiots thinking about sex with teenagers.

So was I. I had it all typed out, and hit submit and the thread was gone. Fuck that noise.

I'm so sorry, it was only after I made my posts that I realized that I was merely derailing the thread. He's not talking about age of consent at all, don't mention it in here, make a new thread if you want to discuss that.

Sorry, Age of Majority != Age of Consent. I take full responsibility for the deletion of that thread. I hope you weren't too pissed off. I probably would have been a little annoyed myself. I completely sidestepped your topic and injected my own thing, my apologies.

No, actually it was my fault for not thinking about it more thoroughly and seeing the potential for that. I was a bit ticked, yes, but mostly at myself, not you guys.

Kids dropping out of school at age 14 would have far too many negative repercussions.

We'd have a bunch of Googoolys running around.

Maybe, but I have to doubt whether those kind of people -- ones who are either very stupid or simply don't care -- would learn much by being kept in school longer anyway. Seems rather unlikely to me that holding them longer does much good...

Posted by Renzo on Oct-18-2008 15:57:

If my kid is 14 and not the smartest kid in the classroom, I'll make him study that much harder. No excuses. If he's apathetic and wants to stop school, I will beat the shit out of him until he regains focus.

He's 14. Like I give a fuck what he wants.

It's a fail idea because 14 year old CHILDREN do not have a fully developed prefrontal cortex, and yeah you sorta need that to "act more responsibly".

Posted by Renzo on Oct-18-2008 16:12:

Look at Jennie trying to act smart and shit.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Oct-18-2008 16:14:

Don't tell anyone, asshole.

How do you explain the fact that hundreds of years ago the people you call "children" held stable jobs, bought their own houses, and married with few problems?

Because they lived in a less advanced time.

It might have some small effect, but I think more systemic changes to the way children are raised would be necessary to realize the kind of difference you seem to have in mind (i.e. the historical comparison.)

True.

I think the fact that teens are penned off into a little world where they are around people the exact same age for the vast majority of the time and almost nothing they do (whether positive or negative) seems to have any real consequences is one reason they act so childish and irresponsible for so long.

Chris Rock dropped out of high school and he's a millionaire. I hope to some day have a child like Chris Rock, but not black.
