Dance Music Manual Second Edition out today

So I got my copy of the second edition of Rick Snoman's Dance Music Manual in the mail today. I've just flipped through it so far, so I haven't really been able to determine how much new content is available in the second edition. I read through the first one a couple years ago and some of the techniques were out of date then, so it'll be interesting to see what has been updated. Its always hard to put out any type of printed material on a subject like dance music, since it changes so rapidly, but I still think it is a great resource for producers both novice and professional. No matter how much this genre changes, the basics of producing remain essentially the same.

I also think its good to refresh yourself on your fundamentals from time to time no matter what level you are at. Even in the few first pages on basic synthesis, there were a few things that were pointed out that I had forgotten.

I should get a chance to read through it more in the next couple of weeks once I go on vacation, but its up on amazon now for those of you who are interested.

Oh so this is an updated version of the original book?

I just had a look at it on Amazong and google books, and it seems pretty solid. 300+ pages with all that info might actually be an interesting read.

While I think I know quite a bit about production now, you never know what kind of ideas you can get from reading something like this. It's not even expensive either.

I have the first book so will check this second book out, it's the small tips and tricks that make the bigger difference

i wont be buying

Ive read the first book ,i believe a lot of stuff that was in the book you could have found on line or you could figure out yourself.

Also there was not much in the first book anyways

Just be creative and do what you want

I feel if its tips and tricks you want you can find a lot more tips and tricks online. The dance manual book he only had the basics in there most people know by know if your producing.

I think he is just trying to make money.

Thanks Eric, was not aware of these books. Might be ordering one now as I too believe it's useful to revisit the fundamentals every so often.

(btw, did you ever do the review of the focals....?)

Just be creative and do what you want and expirement with synths ,theres no need to read a how to make dance music book because each song you make is different everytime you make a song your not gonna go to that chapter in the book you need to have an open mind and just be creative and do things unexpected ,you dont want to sound so typical

some people have a more systematic approach to learning man...

i'd rather read a boat building book before i built a boat... if you want to get misc tips & tricks and try to put them together yourself, then go for it. you can't knock reading material, there are always rules and guidelines in any creative field but knowing all the rules & guidelines will only help you have alternative perspectives.

Posted by newtrancer on Oct-29-2008 21:42:

DJ im not knocking reading books or this book what im saying is if your gonna make a dance manual;

Why not have everything in there like that is considered dance

like happy hardcore, psych ,dark trance,hard core,dream trance,drum n bass,break beats,tech - trance,acid trance.
progressive house,deep house,german techno.
progressive psycadelic trance.

I could go on and on but you know what i mean.

im not knocking reading its good to learn and brush up on stuff ,i read books myself all im saying is i wont buy any more dance music manuals as theres enough material in the first one and there was not much material in the first one anyways.

its like anything else in life you learn english in high school then you write and talk how you want.

you learn how to drive then you have your own way driving

the same with music you learn theory learn a insturment and you have your own style .

no author is gonna tell me how to produce talent comes with hard work
and time . not two weeks after you read a manual.

Looks pretty cool. First time I've heard of the guy.

Would you guys recommend this for a beginner? Or is it directed towards the more advance? Thanks in advance.

Posted by JmanNZ on Nov-01-2008 01:35:

Has anyone read this yet? I read the first one and thought it was brilliant, although a bit dated.

Neverforget: this kind of book is essential for beginners! highly recommended!

Anyway, I would love to know if there is enough new content in there to make it worth buying the second edition.

Hey Eric J

Tell us what is inside this manual (by topics sequence) that is exclusively for dance music creation or that we can't find online.

ie:

* Basics of EQ and Compression
* Room reverb on the drums
* Pan (instruments, reverbs, delays...)
* Sidechaining (bass, pads, efects, reverbs...)
* Parallel compression
* Layering sounds (Higher basses, other layers...)
* The use of a compressor on the master channel
* Pre Mastering a higher volume dance song

Anything more?

This pre information will be very helpful for everyone in this topic

tks dude

I'll be posting a full review in the next couple of weeks, just got back from my honeymoon, so I need to get back into the swing of things.

Well it does get into some topics such as arrangement structure, and has specific sections that deal with genres of dance music (trance, house, hip hop, etc.) that serve to try to guide the reader into what types of methods work well within those genre boundaries. It also has a few sections on non-technical aspects of producing such as promotion and how to go about getting your stuff on a label. However, a lot of the points you mentioned above are indeed covered online, so if thats all the information you are looking for, then the book may not be for you.

Personally, I like having a nice resource to refer to all in one place, especially since there are things that one tends to forget over time and it never hurts to go back and remind yourself of the fundamentals.

I'm not suggesting that the book is for everyone, but it is the only comprehensive resource on producing dance music I have found that I thought was good for both beginners and pros alike. It'll be up to each individual to decide if the text is worth the purchase.

I have this book.

It's okay, but very simplistic and actually focusses on copying other people's techniques and how to "sound like such and such artist", rather than being unique.

It's a good start for a beginner though.

Rick said the DMM 2(will be a new book) will feature more advanced production techniques.

Posted by JmanNZ on Nov-03-2008 21:55:

I can't figure out how to quote more than one line, but the following is from the forum on Ricks website:

I've received a few PM's asking what the difference is between the first and second editions. The second edition is an updated edition of the first (unsurprisingly) but I must stress that it is not Vol.2, it is Vol.1 with updated information.

So what does it contain?

For those familiar with the first edition:

Removed:

The website chapter has been removed (after numerous suggestions/complaints that it did not belong in the book)
The Tools of the Trade chapter has been removed (after numerous suggestions that it dates the book)

Added:

The chapters have been reshuffled to follow a more productive path.
The Music Theory chapter has been updated and some previous editorial errors have been replaced.
Some chapters have been updated to reflect new techniques
A new genre chapter on Drum 'n' Bass
A new genre chapter on UK Garage
A new chapter on Recording instruments.
The CD has been overhauled. The menu that some found confusing along with the demo software have all been removed. In their place are reworked, new audio tracks of each genre, with narration on how the tracks were built and what equipment was used.

You can hear examples of the music on the CD, produced using techniques in the book, using the media player on the DMP home website - www.dancemusicproduction.com
Ricks website

I have the first one as well and will most likely be getting this one and hopefully a future vol.2 !

Posted by Zombie0729 on Nov-05-2008 22:08:

yah i own it now too, about 1/2 done with it. this time i'm much more systematic about it though, highlights, sticky tabs etc. the first edition was good but outdated on a lot of things, this one is much more current with artists we all know and tips & tricks we all use.

i just enjoy reading in general so i bought it, i dont think its for everybody

Posted by itsamemario on Nov-06-2008 02:29:

hmm.. i might get this one.. its always nice to have a few books to read, to check other peoples views on production.

plus it always looks nice with a few books in a bookshelf.

a bookshelf with books in it is great for sound isolation as well!
