Allen & Heath Xone:4D

Is there is any reason there isn't a thread on it yet?

It got an improved sound card and will probably work great with Traktor Pro.

There haven't been too many dedicated threads to it but we've talked about here and there.

It's a nice looking piece of equipment though isn't it.

I had made a thread about it a while ago as well. Seems not too many TAs have it yet.

Check out the Xone forums for some more info... It's been pretty much ALL negative posts on the 4D so far.

Definitely good for a laptop DJ. Lots of Midi stuff built in.

very cool, the soundcard is much better. a bit high priced though, you would be better iff with a 92 and that new vestax controller imho

I posted one about the 4D ages ago, but I can't find it now .

Anyway, now I'm confused. I don't know whether to go for the Xone 4D or the Korg Zero 8

Or maybe I could get the Korg Zero 8 and get 2 Xone 1D's with the leftover money...... I think thats the solution! lol.

It looks OK, but I'd much rather have a 92 and a pair of 1D controllers.

why do you say that?

Posted by Ryan0751 on Oct-22-2008 22:15:

The 4D has a slimmed down reduced feature 92 in the middle. 3 band eq vs 4, less flexible crossfader/filter assigns, only 1 LFO instead of 2, and less flexible AUX returns. Plus no rotary option

It's also ginourmous making it not very portable.

It's still not Traktor Scratch certified either, which is something to consider if you want to use that.

Other that those reasons, it's pretty damn awesome. Perfect for Traktor IMO, for ableton I'd take the vestax VCM-600 anyday. I had the 3D for a few months, and didn't like using it with ableton that much, but a lot of that was do to the 3D VERY limiting sound card.

Really? Over the Korg Zero 8?

Posted by Ryan0751 on Oct-23-2008 11:33:

Absolutely.

The layout of the VCM-600 was designed specifically for Ableton, the Korg is just another MIDI/MIXER/Soundcard combo. There isn't enough MIDI control on the Korg for everything you need to do in Ableton.

The Vestax is just a MIDI controller, specifically designed with Ableton in mind. Pair it with a soundcard, and it's all you need to mix if you're going the Ableton route. There's plenty of MIDI control to mix 'in the box', you don't even need a DJ mixer. Essentially the same concept as Sasha's Maven (without the integrated sound card).

Would you get the Ecler Evo 5 over the Vestax VCM-600? I heard it won the tech award by beating the Xone 4D as well as the Korg Zero 8.

BTW Ryan, are you on DJF as well? I see you in quite a lot of DJ equipment places.

Posted by Ryan0751 on Oct-23-2008 11:39:

Yep that's me, gear whore.

The Ecler looks really cool, with all you can program on it and such. Would I take an Ecler mixer over a Korg? Absolutely. Not that the Korg is bad, I just think the Ecler is a better DJ mixer.

It depends on what you want to do really. If you're going all out ableton, go with the VCM-600 (if it's even out yet, it's been constantly delayed). If you're going more hybrid DJ setup, then something like the Evo 5, Xone 4D, Zero 8 makes sense.

But really, how much of this do you really need to mix trance. Layering and looping and effecting to that extent really only works for the more minimal genres
