York U Students??

CUPE Local 3903 Strike Vote
Teaching assistants and contract instructors at York University have voted 86 per cent in favour of giving their union a strike mandate.

The instructors say they are being asked to teach more than double the amount of classes as regular professors, and that they don't know which classes they will teach each semester until one month before the school starts. They are asking for better job security.

The teaching assistants, graduate students who help professors with marking and sometimes teach classes, are asking for better pay.

The strike mandate doesn't mean instructors and teaching assistants will necessarily go on strike, but it gives the union the ability to walk off the job with 72 hours' notice if they are unable to negotiate a better deal with the school.

I'd post my pic but I'd get hated on

re: strike
holy FUCK!
we had too many strikes like this already... and then they never reimburse students and we're expected to know the material we don't get taught

whats the word on this??

Posted by Ania_xox on Nov-03-2008 03:45:

they updated the Y-File this morning but no agreement has been reached
they called for Binding Arbitration again but I think it will just be knocked down again

This is fucking bullshit
I go to York's French campus (Glendon) where close to none of the action is going on and we are going to be shut down too

I'm in an accelerated program and my sched is SO tight as it is.
If this school year spills over into May and fucks with my internship I'm going to firebomb something

There should be a final answer tomorrow

Might be selfish, but I wouldn't mind a week to do a bit of catchup right now. That said, chances are if they go on strike it'll be for a while which wouldn't be too pretty as it means things start getting delayed.
I really hope they'll have a response by tomorrow, either way.

yeah i talked to one of my TA's at class on friday and was told it looks most likely they will shut down everything on the 6th. i heard the last strike was 70+ days? that is insane i mean i wouldn't mind a strike for the 6th for like a week i actually have a presentation @ glendon then so that would be fine..but again if it messes with my summer plans i would be extremely po'd

University reaches tentative agreement with CUPE 1356

The University and CUPE Local 1356, representing custodial, maintenance, service and plant operations staff, have reached a tentative agreement for a three-year collective agreement.

A ratification vote is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 4. No information concerning the terms of the agreement will be released prior to the ratification vote.

looks like students will have to wait til tomorrow
I don't find this very reassuring... it says nothing about TAs or part-time profs

Don't forget about CUPE 3903 who are far from settled at this point.

i think more York U students will be paying attention to the US election vote tomorrow than this collective bargaining vote

I think i've been through 2 or 3 York Strikes in my day lol

All of them were resolved at the last possible minute before the strike deadline...

but they do get resolved in the end.

Why do you want a strike??

Just like Graham said, it's your tuition money that is being thrown away.

I pretty sure you are aware that they won't be making up any missed class time.

And since its getting pretty close to exam time, i'm sure you don't want to miss to much class time.
