My dad took a class over an 8 hour day at had a huge speed boost by the end of it. It really works but you need proper coaching..testing, and practice. The trick is to stop sounding out the words in your head basically. The human mind can comprehend chunks of words at a time, but we have trained ourselves to sound each word out as if we are talking. This really limits the reading potential of most people.

No way I'm giving that voice up! It sounds like Morgan Freeman!

I'm not sure what "rate" of reading qualifies as speed reading, but I'm fairly sure I do this already.

My inner voice sounds like Ben Stein.

My inner voice sounds like:

Once I have a good idea of what a person is like, my mind automatically comes up with a voice for them. MrJiveBoJingles sounds like a professor with glasses and a beard. Lira sounds like an enlightened young man who's seen and experienced more than most people will ever know.

Halcyon+On+On sounds like an intelligent, but malicious and overly sarcastic young man -- an evil sociopath. lcid sounds like a teenager who seems innocent, happy and cheery all the time but is secretly depressed, dark, and experienced in private (only happy when with her SO). RJT has a generic corporate voice, but very friendly and approachable. mezzir sounds like HAHAHAHA looooooooool, his voice is HILARIOUS. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA I can't even describe how fucking hilarious he is. jennypie sounds like a butt slut in a shitty, low-budget porn movie.

I sound like a toddler's voice when they can first speak basic sentences, but incredibly deep (think barry white slowed down, but still with the baby-ness quality) and lispy and I stammer constantly. That's my inner voice.

On another board I used to have a picture of Daniel Dennett (a bearded, glasses-wearing professor) as my avatar and before I told people my age they just assumed it was my actual picture. This was before Dennett had gotten more famous for being one of the so-called "new atheists."
