And I've lived here for 6 years

Google tells me he is a London-based electro dj that used to play at The End.

He is from London, so no doubt they all voted for him down there, which probably counts for a zillion percent of the UK votes. True story.

* I haven't heard of him either lol.

Na, that Chinese dude got banned after last year

Hell, I live on the other side of the planet, and I've known about Alkan for years now. T'was one of the early adopters of mash-ups along with 2ManyDJs.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Oct-28-2008 14:19:

He's part of the rockier, nu-ravey "electro" end of the spectrum, not all that dissimilar to the likes of Digitalism or Justice and as such he has currency in both house and rocky crowds. Although frankly I'm astounded that so many people haven't even heard of him. Get out more. Or just buy a copy of Mixmag once in a while.

While still pretty dodgy, this list is actually indicative of decent taste amongst my fellow countrymen. Nobody would dispute Danny Howells at #4 and there seems to be less shit trance on there and more variety in terms of genres represented.

Are you all taking the piss? How can you be into electronic music and not heard of Erol Alkan?

Posted by Zild on Oct-28-2008 14:45:

LOL this list is just as bad as the official Top 100 list.

Agreed completely, even though I'm no longer an Englishman But this list is a bit more accurate, even though, like you've said it has its dodgy bits.

I'm hardly interested in the nu-ravey "electro" end of the spectrum, "getting out more" wouldn't teach me anything as I'm not in London, and I'm not interested in spending money in magazines.

But thanks for explaining who the guy is anyway.

Neither am I and neither do I live in London, but I like to keep up with at least the major names in every scene so I'm not left baffled when one of them tops a popularity chart. But perhaps that's because I'm a music journalist.

I don't listen to house/prog/techno/and a couple of other genres

Electro, especially, makes me want to rip my ears off, and stuff like Digitalism is so boring. (I only heard of them because an ex-housemate was a huge fan, whenever we'd have house parties, we'd humour him for 15 minutes tops before switching the music to something else, hehe)

Posted by DRM on Oct-28-2008 17:56:

It is a much better list than the DJ Mag one and I think that's indicative of the fact that in the UK the dance music scene has passed its (most recent) boom period in the late 90's / early 00's and as such now a large percentage of the people in the UK who still listen to dance music have been around longer. Whereas the more emerging scenes in north America still have plenty of new blood who haven't scratched the surface yet.

Still surprised Erol Alkan is number 1 though. He seemed to be much more popular a couple of years back and I haven't heard as much from him recently.

yeah, it's at least all got british voters so relevant to the UK itself.

Mylo - Drop The Pressure (Erol Alkan's Extended Re-Edit) - great tune.

+1 that this poll is better then the rest (DJ Mag)

Posted by Zild on Oct-28-2008 19:29:

WTF? It's basically the same shit just rearranged a bit. Anyone who thinks this is in anyway better than the DJ Mag list is smoking a bit too much of their own cock.

Firstly you're wrong because there are many jocks there not on the overall chart and vice versa, and secondly the arrangement is somehwat important in a poll of ascending merit.

EDIT: I'm keeping that typo because it's wonderfully appropriate to my point.
