Artists with a "detailed" sound
Producers whose tracks have a lot of little elements going on that really reward headphone listening. I don't mean just piling up a massive amount of repetitive layers, though. I'm thinking of guys like:
BT
Hybrid
Autechre
Aphex Twin
Apart from the usual IDM suspects, who are your favorite producers who write tracks that really tickle the ears?

Way Out West. The amount of detail they put in is incredible at times- snatches of music or samples that only crop up once or twice in an entire track and placed at key places. Listen to Domination and the detail in every section of that track is incredible.

"Placed at key places"? Aii my inelegant repetition! It burns!
The only one I can think of right now is Trentemller. His usual dancefloor cuts might not be that much detailed, but listen to 'While The Cold Winter Waiting' or 'Always Something Better (Non-vocal version)' on his album and prepare for some aural sex.
Also, Telefon Tel Aviv, but you said no usual IDM suspects ![]()
I have to agree with Trentemoller. His Last Resort album was far from being dance floor driven, yet when listened to while lying down with cans on you can really get lost in the different textures he bleeds in and out.

you won't like the music itself, that i am pretty sure of...but Pheek uses sounds quite well.

Gonna have to suggest Shpongle here...
Also maybe Luke Chable. Maybe not wuite right in terms of tiny details, but his tracks are sheer ear candy anyways.
I think Quivver puts a lot of "little stuff" and small changes in his tracks.

Perhaps you want to look at some Apparat stuff too?
Brian Wilson.
With MONO, no less!
Bit of a fan of Fred Falke, he's got a lot of little stuff going on. Chicane, lamb and of course hybrid are others that come to mind... Hybrid especially, their albums have a lot of work going into chopping up and granularising various samples...
Haha, laughing at my airwalker imitation
Markus Fix
Konrad Black
Stimming
Daze Maxim
Reboot
Fuckin tons more...I like music that is detailed.

Another I'm just going to mention is Olien. Yeah, yeah... he's essentially a dark-psy producer -how dare he ever be compared with some of the names that have been mentioned thus far.
Yet, whenever I listen to his music with my eyes closed, it's like some twisted kaleidescope begins to form in my mind's eye. It's detailed sound, though in a weird trippy way.
Ambient so I dunno if this really counts, but I've always found music by The Orb to have an insane amount of layers, textures, and a varied song progression.
