Smiling Frog Urei 1603 - any opinions on this piece of equipment?

Does anyone have (or had) this mixer? Where is it manufactured? How is the sound and build quality? I'm particularly interested in the quality of the linear faders. Is it on par with e.g. Xone:62 or Nuo 4 (not taking the lack of FX into account)?

Any real experience reports would be really appreciated. Thanks!

I know Urei make's really quality club installation mixers. I doubt they'd tarnish their name with a lack-luster mixer. I'm sure it's epic, however, I've never used it.

This mixer cam out a couple of years ago (not more) and it was high on my list as I wanted a 4 channel good quality mixer with fx sends and returns. I demo's it and it felt solid, but didn't care much for the size of the knobs (again that's quite a personal subjective thing).

I remember someone having a problem with the headphone jack getting stuck in the recessed front part and a couple of other people had the the same issue too but this was minor.

Don't be fooled by the name. Urei is not the same brand as it was 20 years ago - the name got bought by soundcraft, so this is effectively a soundcraft mixer, but they're a good brand too and overall this is a great mixer.

If you're on to a good deal, snap it up, it's definitely a good peice of kit.

Dog Running

has anyone actually compared the sound of Urei 1603 and the hi-end DJ mixers like the Xones, Nuos and DJM800? I spin pure vinyl now and I wouldn't want my mixer to spoil the warmth of the analog sound with its numerous digital A\D

i've heard nothing but great things about this mixer.

they're selling them cheap at htfr.com

I've used it before and I really liked it. Definetly a solid mixer and worth the price. the soundquality is better than pioneer in my opinion but not as good as A&H.

I paid for it and after 2 days of waiting my local UPS called and said they received the parcel and now it's waiting to be cleared of customs... have to wait 1-2 weeks now.... darn can't wait to get my hands on it

keep the discussion going on!

I've heard some real horror stories about hard to find.. Such as buying records that are not in stock and being charged for them but they never send them, or beind raided by the police for selling illegal shit..

Very dodgy company - having said that the one and only time i bought something from them it arrived next day, it's just I hear a lot of bad reports about them..

Bought some equipment of them about a month ago and only getting it this weekend, UPS made a royal fuckup on the delivery, unless htfr change their delivery options i dont think id chance buying anything off them ever again

arent the eqs set to 1 o'clock as opposed to 12 o'clock for the middle?

i can't remember to be honest...

if it is true...i find it odd that they have it set to 1 instead of 12

no you won't. htfr is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) dj gear sellers in the uk. i ordered some stuff there a while ago and had no problems whatsoever.

i know they've been dodgy with vinyls before at least, selling stuff they've pressed themselves and whatnot, but i think you can trust them with equipment.

yeah. out of my 100+ records, the only warped, stained and scratched ones were the ones bought from HTFR. all other records were bought from Discogs and all in great condition

Posted by boris_the_bear on Nov-06-2008 11:39:

alright! got the mixer on my table. great piece of gear. a very warm and crisp but kind of strange sound. not like my ex-mixer Ecler. i can't put it in words but it's just diffirent. the EQs are more like filters, basically you can simulate a LP and HP filter without actually having one on board. the faders feel not so solid but are long and stiff so that's a plus for smooth transitions
overall I rate this (my) mixer a 9/10
