Drone Ambient

I usually like my music frantic and energetic but drone ambient is so dreamy that I don't even care there is no beat. "Stars of the Lid" is by far my favourite group, and there's some great stuff by "Loscil" as well.

Is anyone else into it? Who here knows what the hell I'm talking about?

Yes, Stars Of The Lid are great, so peaceful and organic. I also listen to quite a few more or less similar acts like Windy & Carl, Labradford, Pan-American, Tim Hecker and last but not least pioneers Fripp & Eno. A lot of organic textures, electric guitar drones, the Kranky label etc.

Then i must of course mention other people like Steve Roach, Robert Rich and Vidna Obmana who i view as part of a different school of ambient. While not being strictly drone ambient a lot of their music certainly falls into the category.

Stars of The Lid, Loscil, Windy and Carl, Labradford,Pan-American, Tim Hecker they are all great (and ofcourse the more dark ambient Roach/Rich/Lustmord/Obmana league). I was recently listening to Labradford's "A Stable Reference" album again, man, Labradford have such a strange and independent sound, i don't think that they strongly resemble anyone else. Very bleak, claustrophobic and desolate (and ofcourse slow) yet it does not get boring or acoustically difficult by any sense (to my ears at least!-also love the kind-of "American-West-Ghost-City" feel they evoke). I like how they are very organic, making limited (or possibly no) use of synths and computers but heavy use of various effects, feeding their quitars through all sorts of reverbs and distortions leading to the ethereal and dark result. I think the same thing can be told for all the bands you mention e.g. Stars of the Lid (the last album was brilliant and very organic with the orchestral elements and stuff) the very thick and deep Windy and Carl etc. Also some albums by Eluvium are quite "drone-influenced" as well, blending the neo-classical (piano) with slowly evolving sound-scapes.


Another fantastic drone-influenced band i was listening recently was "Slow Dancing Society" and more particularly the album "A Slow and Steady Winter". I have to say that they are not "steady" (well they are slow lol) at all, their productions are quite evolving and emotional i would say, with lots of layers of slowly evolving beautiful melodies etc (i think that they came with a new album or something like that named "Priest Lake Circa '88"). They sound like a deeper and more drone-like version of Hammock. Must listen. Another artist i was listening to lately is "Manual". Here is his myspace

Lastly i have to say that i like a bit of slow drone-metal or metalgaze, not extreme stuff like "Earth" and "Sunn O))" but "Nadja"- a very nice project IMO. Here is a youtube video of a very good song- "Stays Demons". Some of their albums are brilliant.

By the way, Gauss, "Brighter Death Now" doesn't really sound like drone ambient. What tunes are you specifically talking about? I listened to a sample on last.fm of "I wish I was a little girl" (or something like that), and it was quite good, but it wasn't really ambient

It was just a thought. He produces dark ambient which often boarders with power electronics (I think), rather creepy music, so I associated it with drone ambient.
