Montreal vs Toronto vs NA Electronica scene
Okay.. with all this debate going on on who has the better scene between Montreal and Toronto. I will give my two cents.
Give you some background on me. I am a Montreal and have been living here for the past 12 years, but, contrarely to most of you, I have been to a lot of other places and for a long period: Toronto (for 6 months: work and party), LA & San Diego (1 week: party), New York (1 week of partying), Boston, San Fran, Miami, Ibiza, London, Barcelona, Rimini, Rome, Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam and I could go on..
I camn honestly say that MTL has one of the best nightlifes in the world.. London has a great one too, but it is different.. same goes with Ibiza... It is hard to compare North America to Europe since european cities tend to have on a regular basis the best DJs and that the electronic scene has matured.. People tend to be older and classier at events.. Anyways, I could start a whole thread on a europe vs north america perception of electronica and clubbing scene.
Now, as far as North America is concerned, I would have to say that, the only cities that can compare (same if not better) to Montreal are NY City, San Fran and Miami.
Now, here is why Toronto is not better than Montreal (and trust me I wa sthere for 6 months, so I know the place really well).
1. Electronic music in MTL is a lifestyle, mainstream and is everywhere. Most bars, restaurants and clubs play electronica. St-Laurent street is, for me, reminiscent of Italy (where house music is huge too) and Ibiza. Everything everywhere is house/techno/etc. In Toronto, the more commercial and most popular sound is R&B and hip hop.
2. Toronbto does not have the same type of quality chill-out restaurant-bars that we have in Montreal.. The only other place you can find such a huge proportion of house bars (Im talking here about all St-lAurent bars) (not clubs) is in Europe
3. As far as DJ quality and number, I think that the scenbe is pretty comparable. You do have a comparable number of great DJs comming to Toronto. So, no real difference there!
4. I personnaly don't enjoy the TO crowd much (but, some people might prefer the TO crowd):
a) It is much more of a clubber crowd
b) There are lots of 50-year old cracked out asians at the Guvernment (one of the main TO afters)
c) There are not as many sexy people
d) People tend to be not as sociable
e) There are lots of really young people
BUT, I think that you can find better dancers (lots of liquid dancers), better lightshow people than in MTL
WHILE in MTL, it is more of a "Touch me and I want to touch you" crowd in afters/raves (in general)
5. The fact that clubs close at 2AM really sucks especially for someone used to going out later at night (12-1AM like me)
6. Venues:
a) The guvernment is probably one of the most beautiful complexes I have ever seen (it is even comparable to some Ibiza clubs; but the crowd just sucks (see above), the DJ is too far from the action... A great laser system though, and great side rooms (Charlies, Tanja, etc)
b) System is not bad.. it is sort of the TO sona.. even though the crowd, again, is not as fashionable and nice looking as at Sona
c) Turbo, Tonic and others are okay at best.
d) Industry, while it was open, was the shit. I must say that since the place has closed down, the TO nightscene has gone down a lot (especially the crowd)
e) Lack of variety... You only have 3-4 afters with a handful of descent clubs and bars for a city twice the size of Montreal..
So, anyways, I believe that MTL has one of the better nightlifes ine North America (even the world).
1) It is completely different that the European scene, so it is impossible to compare
2) Compared to other major NA cities, only NY, Miami, and San Fransisco are comparable
3) Toronto, without Industry, and with the subpar crowd, lackluster variety and quantity of good house/techno bars/clubs, etc, can not compare to Montreal's
Don't get me wrong. I've enjoyed myself in the past in TO and it is great and better than lots of cities' (for example, LA, Boston, Atlanta, etc), but Montreal, due to its European touch/influences and all points mentionned above, is, in my opinion, better!
Sorry for the long post.. but I had to give my two cents on that issue...

to try and keep it short.....
why montreal kicks ass:
-in montreal every single club/bar plays house or techno or electro....in every other canadian city it's usually mainstream hip-hop and top 40 crap.....
-the afterhours clubs in mtl...sona, stereo and aria are the 3 best clubs in canada...
-the amount of hot ladies at every club is incredible
-the amount of huge techno and progreesive dj's is crazy
-they party harder than any other city..at 9 am the big clubs are still packed..
-tiesto 3 times a year
why montreal sux:
-no breakbeat or drum n bass scene at all..none!
-most ppl are completely clueless about electronic music and couldnt tell if it was richie hawtin or tiesto...nevermind if it were techno/trance..they just like hard beats
-every dj plays way way to hard in that city.....it's always really hard...sometimes to much for my liking
-the hells angels run the town and will sooner or later kill the scene
-it's a way more older serious clubber crowd than cool fun raver crowd
-514
-tiesto for $70.00
next review...toronto
both of you suck
what a complete waiste of time
damn zing! lower ont that caffeine
zing sed bouzak and call me

i can tell the difference between richie hawtin and TIESTO

ZinG sed bouzak ya khara
madinetna a7sen men madinethoum
anyway , to make things shorter , MONTREAL IS THE PARTY CITY

tta stfu u're the last person to comment on this subject
STFU eh.....i knew crap like that would come from a fool like you zing anyways. The toronto house scene is bigger than the montreal one.....you bunch of fruits. Do i care how many ppl go to montreal, that's there opinion and options. I'll just wait till you mofos arrive in t.o for armin....later this month.
torontotrance, Montreal as much people in downtown than toronto.
Toronto is big because of it's subburbs.
There is 1 200 000 residency people in Montreal downtown and only 600 000 in Toronto.
The only really good thing Toronto as more than Montreal is money!! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ is the only thing we really need over here!
But there is much more action in Montreal, there is latin blood people that make people really warm and ready to party like crazy.
Many festivals and party like:
Black & Blue
Bal en Blanc
Cream
Gay Pride Week (over 1 million people, biggest in Canada)
Arrivals
Formula 1 week-end (Canada biggest event and money from outside the country)
Jazz Festival (World biggest)
Cart Indy racing week-end
Just for Laugh festivals
Francofolies Festivals
And some party like:
OASIS
Swirl
Celebration
and all other underground party (less than 3000 people)
Clubs and afterhours like:
Aria
Sona
Stereo
Red-Lite
Level
Ilume
Sky
Unity
Groove Society
Jet club
Living
and many mores...
As for Toronto Drum & Bass scene, yes it's really good for you but all the biggest drum & Bass artists played Montreal:
GrooveRider
LTJ Bukem
Adam F
Hype
Rony Size
etc...
Montreal is not better than Toronto but really different.
The biggest difference is Montreal more underground than Toronto.
It start later, close later, harder music et...
Toronto is more USA style.
i think this thread is kind of pointless, to each his own!

you toronto losers think you're all that because you are bigger... your scene in comparison to ours doesn't even come close... I have 4 really good friends, of them my best friend, move down to toronto because of a job (all 4 of them at the same place, heh), and it has been about 3 months, and let me tell you, they hate it... the only place they found that came close was guvernment, but even then, the people there, the energy felt, and everything esle related to that was garbage compared to a night at aria, or sona... you know how it is at certain clubs and bars in montreal, the attitude is so flowing that i am beyond words when there isn't a fight or an argument... its the same thing there... they all had the same impression... the people you are dancing for 4-5-6-... hours, which are 2 inches from you the whole night, if it isn't a relaxed, happy, cheerful experience, it ruins the night... I'm going down to TO in a couple of weeks to see them, and we'll be going to the guvernment, to see steve lawler... I can't wait, but not expecting a night similar to the one that I would have at aria or even sona (and you guys know how i feel about sona)...
other than that (quoting Biggy):
Many festivals and party like:
Black & Blue

Gay Pride Week (over 1 million people, biggest in Canada)

Absolutely no comparison.... look, I'm not saying that the toronto scene sucks, i'm just saying that you guys don't come close to the amount of house/techno/trance music festivities that we have, let alone all the other stuff quoted... fine your city, I have to admit, the last time I went down, which was 2 months ago (was the first time then in about 10 years), I was very impressed by the city size, and how it resembled so much New York... all the shopping centres, Younge street, queen street, no comparisons to St-Catherine boulevard, or St-Laurent... very dynamic, and all that, but still i have to go back to the people... when you walk on montreal streets, you can feel the warmth of the people... Toronto has none of that... and it is reflected to the underground scene very much so, and it is the major downfall... when I am at a rave or after hour, when walking around, I love to see people with smiles on their faces, looking like they are having a good time, and when i see that, i tap the person on the shoulder, and we have a wink... the same thing as saying I'm happy that you are happy (drug or no drug)... and the person taps me on the shoulder, it is mutual... I get most of my energy from that... and that is what drives me during the night... of course the music is also a main driving force on me, but if there was no mutual happyness (and showing it), i dont like it...
anyways, i've rambled on for long enough... just my thoughts on this subject, which i waited a little, wanted to see the outcome...

no, me personally have not take a survey on everyone in toronto, no one has, but my 4 buddies that i fully trust, who are in toronto, and also were in montreal all their lives (well except for one of them who was somewhere else for a couple of years something like 6 years ago), and they kept telling me how much they miss the montreal scene, and how much they rarely party now that they are there... we used to always go out, have fun, raves, after hours clubs, everything... now, i feel they're pain... but let me tell you something, they like toronto during the day... downtown TO is really nice, and they are still exploring, but as for night life, not much... and dont tell em that it is so because of the fact that they moved to a city where they don't know many people... they ahve lots of friends who go out in toronto, and they have been out with them... and still...
as for saying losers... i didnt mean it, i just threw a word without thinking... i'm not the type to swear and insult for no reason, i dont even know you guys... hehe
Toronto is really good but different than Montreal.
Anyway if it was all the same in every city, it would be a disaster.

as Biggy said:
Vive la diffrence! read this review of Montreal by the very respectable "The Guardian" of UK here:http://www.guardian.co.uk/Archive/A...4375663,00.html
3. Have a drink at 737 Club (00 1 514 397 0737). On the forty-third floor of the Place De Ville Marie, on the corner of Rue Ren Levesque and Rue Universit, this is a favourite hangout for the city's beautiful people. At sunset, the view from one of the highest points in the city becomes breathtaking, as do some of the clientele. Happy hour is from 5-7pm on Thursdays.
altho it's DA GINO PLACE by definition in Montreal , i love that place , awesome terrasse
another review, now by Maxim

why is it always Montrealer's who start this sort of discussion. And it's always those insults, insults, insults.. It looks as if you yourselves are not sure about your scene, and so trying to come up with arguments to convince YOURSELVES that it's better.
anyone who gonna comment on this topic again i will personnaly come to his house and kick his ass.
u wankers
