First TV Hologram on CNN

November 4th, 2008

During the American election Jessica Yellin was recorded as a hologram and beamed into the studio.

I saw this and personally wasn't impressed, such awful quality and just strange looking.

lol saw that...theres a difference between a holograms and that.

yea its cool that they had multiple angles recording her but she was not projected in the studio as they portrayed her...but merely synced and overlayed on the studio video taken co relating to angles the cameras in the studio were placed at.

hologram..pffft...

they spent 3 days setting up something as pointless as that soon to be taken down again...talk about not knowing when the moment is right

Just saw this as well, i thought it looked pretty decent actually.

Considering an earlier interview with the same reporter wasn't audible as the crowds in the background were way to noisy (ovcviously), I thought the hologram idea was pretty well utilized. She was able to head into a secluded tent and basically got beamed into CNN headquarters. The quality was a little shady and you could see parts flicker, but for a first try i thought it was pretty well done actually.

Should be interesting to see how this technology is utilized in the future.

holy crap...stop saying beamed..she wasnt "beamed"

It honestly looked exactly like the hologram of Princess Leia from Star Wars lol

They even mentioned it lol

Did anyone else see their hologram of the White House they used?

I love watching CNN HD.

Watching it in HD just makes it so much better. You get all that extra info on side panels (eventhough this election doesn't have much good info).

Even ABC is using the HD panels to continuously display extra info for us!

HD!!

considering the fact that it was the FIRST hologram on TV i wasn't expecting it to look 100% life like. 30 years ago holograms were only in sci-fi movies, no one even imaged that something like that would be possible.

Sure the quality wasnt the best but if you think about the fact that that it was a 3D moving image of someone hundreds of kilometers away, its pretty impressive to me. Its these types of innovations and technological advancements that move society forward.

twas kinda cool..

Posted by exstasie on Nov-05-2008 02:34:

I wonder how much it cost them do that.

The chick said they had like 30 HD cameras surrounding her and this special tent and stuff.

All of that for like 1 minute worth. Hopefully they use it a bit more.

Posted by LKD on Nov-05-2008 02:38:

what was wrong with split screen conferencing? in the end of the day, both cases they had to look at tv screens to see each other and we couldnt really care less how the back of her head or his head for that matter look

i loved how the beam beamed her in. the beaming was the best part.

kinda pointless?

The only reason why it was done was just to say that they were the first network to develop some type of holographic image.

They kept saying that over and over again...

Yes, it was freaking awesome, but it was completely pointless.

Well, it sort of was:

On the subject's side:
35 HD cameras pointed at the subject in a ring
Different cameras shoot at different angles (like the matrix), to transmit the entire body image
The cameras are hooked up to the cameras in home base in NY, synchronizing the angles so perspective is right
The system is set up in trailers outside Obama and McCain HQ
Not only is it mechanical tracking via camera communication, there's infrared as well
Correspondents see a 37-inch plasma where the return feed of the combined images are fed back to them. Useful for a misplaced hair or an unseemly boogar
Twenty "computers" are crunching this data in order to make it usable

On the HQ side:
Only used on two out of 40-something total camera feeds that CNN has
Wolf Blitzer really loves it (or loves Jessica Yellin):

It's still Jessica Yellin and you look like Jessica Yellin and we know you are Jessica Yellin. I think a lot of people are nervous out there. All right, Jessica. You were a terrific hologram.

The delay is either minimal, or we've gotten used to satellite delay that we don't even notice now
An array of computers takes the crunched info feed from the subject's side in order to mesh it with the video from Wolf's side.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the images are actually "projected" onto the floor of the CNN studio so that Wolf can actually talk to the person, you know, in a face to face. So it's not quite Star Wars just yet. Only after computers merge the video feeds together do you get a coherent hologram + person scenario

Yo! They got holograms now????

j/k

NOT a hologram. Unless 'hologram' is Swahili for 'pointless endeavour undertaken to make pointless claim'. It was a cool idea, but come on, just show me the fucking news...I'll watch Star Trek if I want to see fancy new technology.
