Do you DJ for the Love of music or for the $$?

Hey guys.. so I was just wondering, a lot of us play out in clubs and bars here and get paid for doing so. But if you came across a situation where somebody wanted you to play alongside a big name DJ but can't pay you for doing it, would you do it?

Posted by ad0nis on Nov-05-2008 23:59:

Of course I would... Honestly, im only a bedroom DJ, without any experience playing in clubs, so i dont know how much harder it would be to dj in a club environment.... but just the thought of playing beside Armin Van Buuren or someone would just make me the happiest person in the world... just the experience of playing infront of hundreds or thousands of people would be enough for me... hell i would even pay for the flight ticket to europe just to play along side him

Honestly, if they can afford anyone big, what's the problem with a few 10ers for you then?

Of course you have to start somewhere though... If they're (=promoter) confident you'll stand your ground next to a big name, you should be more confident about yourself and realize you're worth at least a bit of $. Plain and simple.

I think the fact that I'm sitting here posting about this on the internet answers the question

I'm actually curious, those of you who do DJ for money, how much on average do you make from that per year?

Posted by jupiterone on Nov-06-2008 05:31:

Not much, going to Finland today for a gig this saturday. It doesn't earn that much, but all expenses are covered. Free food lol . Then again I'm not that popular, but things are starting to get better I must say .

i live in turku, so it's no problem for me. gonna go see the new bond movie with a bunch of mates earlier on saturday. gonna have to ask them if they'd come along to listen to some good music.

Posted by Storyteller on Nov-06-2008 11:08:

Cool, just come up and say hi, even in the middle of the set. Just do it Maybe I'll tell you to wait a sec, but you know hehe. Till then perhaps!

I do it for the music. But you aren't going to get me out of my house or studio without paying me.

Posted by Imagin on Nov-06-2008 11:48:

I do it for the love of taking 2 separate entities and making them into something completely new of my making. I love to watch the crowds reaction and to see the bodies in motion enjoying themselves. Getting paid is definitely a nice bonus for doing something I enjoy.

Posted by chesco on Nov-06-2008 11:55:

I once wouldn't start playing my set at my mates 21st until his dad paid me my fee's and lined up 5 huge lines of columbia's finest.

He's no longer my friend.

hookers n blow with the odd free scarf here and there.

to be honest, it is a loaded question.

it is either a hobby or a job.

I will stop DJing once it becomes purely a money thing for me.

Wicked set .

And as for the discussion, I am 19 and i would like to start getting some gigs myself. i wouldnt really care if i got paid or not for my first few gigs or so becuase the first experiences of playing out for the public and learning from them would be enough, And the enjoyment of course, but if i gradually started more gigs throughout the years, i would expect a little payment. i would still play of course even if i didnt get paid, no question about it.

love of music for me then money part is a close second.

Posted by Shudder on Nov-10-2008 09:36:

cool thanks for the responses.. djing for me has always been abt the music.. but it was interesting seeing what everybody thought about this

Posted by DJ Manuel C on Nov-10-2008 19:43:

I most DEFINITELY do it for the music....Here in Miami, if you're in it for the money you are in bad shape. Unless you are a RESIDENT DJ @ one the clubs down here, good luck if you get paid within 2 weeks of the party, of if you even get paid @ all. Most of the time, if your a "special guest dj", chances are its a non paying gig...but the publicity is much more rewarding than the money in my opinion.
