Are Job Recruiters Really Cheap Nowadays?
So I've been checking Craigslist quite regularly for the past couple of months. Luckily I got a job last week but I'm still looking for something that pays better. But it seems that if you want to earn a decent salary while being employed by somebody else, you better be a good sales person and earn your commission, otherwise the chances of making a decent salary are slim.
What I mean is, do you think businesses could really only afford to pay the measly $9 or $10 an hour? If they paid 13 or 14, would it really cut into their revenues? For example, check out this posting:
Beginning at 15-20h per week but will grow.
Work involves basic computer work with Adobe Photoshop/Dreamweaver/Premiere, meeting with customers (at the office). Car is required to run some errands (few times a week). Must be able to read/write in French and English.
Pay is $10/hr. I mean fuck, if I'm gonna be asked to apply my photoshop/Dreamweaver skills (which I do have), and to run errands while having to have my own car, there is no fucking way I would settle for $10/hr. It seems to me like employers in Montreal are extremely cheap these days. I actually really regret leaving my last job, where I was earning over $14/hr, but fortunately was not for a regretful reason.
With any entry level position (especially in sales) you have to bite the bullet and prove your worth to make more.
Do you have an education?
Do you have an experience level that dictates a higher salary?
Know how won't get you anywhere unless you prove it and have the references to back it up. It has nothing to do with Montreal, this is the same thing everywhere.
Also, you are using craiglist to job search.
WE ARE IN AN ECONOMIC CRISIS DUDE
also...go see a job recruiter (RANSTAD,QUANTUM,ADECO,MANPOWER etc...) If you want to make 14$ an hour they will find you a job in a warehouse right away at that salary.

it does not do much in the way of career progression though, which is ok if you want to be a bus boy for life. Sometimes taking a bit less money is worth it if it is something that has potential reward in the long term.
dude you can make more selling crap at futureshop than 10$.

| Originally posted by fullhouse lol nonesense i'm a student and have worked in various telemarketing/customer service inbound/outbound outsourced/in store offices. dont mean to bust your bubble but most of these positions are actually occupied by students. you dont get promoted in one restaurant, you get promoted as a person. if you become a manager, you're qualified as a manager. meaning you're eligible to take up a position for manager in a restaurant looking for a manager. retiring hasn't anything to do with where you work... it's called a plan. to break it down, you put money aside. lol *gives the toonie to the busboy* |

soon...be afraid.
For real ? So that's why the freak career is over lol !
Anyways, you want good money ? Get back to high school/cegep/college/university, whatever and get the degrees that will make you the guy 4 corporations fight over for. You're gonna eat kraft dinner for a few years while studying but education is an investment.
experience does not alway result in higher salary (depending on the field).
ex.:
In management, the young guy on his first job with a MBA gets hired by some corporation, has 0 experience, and will get paid same or even more than the 10-15-20+ years of experience middled-aged guy who started at the bottom of the ladder and worked his way up.
I know it sucks, but that's how it is. A friend of mine (cegep education) hates it when these young know-it-alls come in the office, 23-25 years old, and tell him what to do, and get paid better money. The fact is that they got that little piece of paper.
The system is based on knowledge knowadays. The old model (start at a company, spend your life there, work your way up the ladder) is gone.
None of the level-entry jobs get you good money. They get outsourced in India, where people will do it for 2$ a day.
If you want to stay competitive, make yourself invaluable. In this era, education, knowledge is power.

At a job interview in engineering, I have been offered 38k/year.
"Hmmm Let me think about it...
No thank you !"
engineering and IT are the worst fields to get into, there's no money to make, you'll top out at 100k of today's money in your career.
