Headphones instead of monitors help...

i'm on a tiiight budget, sadly, and have no spare cash for nice monitors atm, and won't for a while since i'd prefer to spend my money on other production equipment first...
i'm yet to buy a proper AI even (using the inbuilt AI on my novation xiosynth): i'm looking at getting a echo audiofire 4 in the next month, as it seems like it's the best card in it's price-range (PLEASE advise if this is an incorrect assumption)

Anyway, so! i'm gonna get some decent headphones and use them for production, which i'm pretty much doing now anyway in place of good monitors, using my ATH-Pro5 MS headphones which i use for mixing: they're pretty average, so i'm looking at some AKGs atm...

again, i have a really limited budget, and am looking at spending around $200-300aud, or $135-200US, as the aus dollar is fkd atm

any headphones you guys think work well for production purposes??

anyone else use predominantly headphones for production!?

It really comes down to personal taste. I use headphones Sony MDR-7506. They are cheap, fit great & don't fatigue my ears. I think the best thing for you is to test as many pairs as you can in youre price range.

cool, i think that's deffinitly true come to DJ headphones as it's really more about comfort etc, and less about clarity of sound (in a loud environment), was wondering if people had experience with quality of sound for different cans, like between AKG or sennheiser...?

i guess they'd be similar as far as my n00b ears could tell anyway
just thout i'd ask

thanks for the reply

WRONG answer.

AKG k240 was the correct answer, as you'd both know had you searched the other 10 threads on headphones

I use AKG k701's to do a lot of my arrangement on o keep the noise down, everything translates extremely well

AKG K240S. It will always be recommended here and for good reason.

Good choice. You can't go wrong with an Echo interface.

Again, good choice. Go with the K240S. You might have trouble finding them as they are discontinued. But the K240MkII or the K242HD are replacements for the K240S (The K240MkII is the better choice).

AUDIO TECHNICA ATH-M50

Seems to be the new kid in town. Being praised by many audio engineers and knowledgeable people in the business.
Fairly good price too! I might have to order these.

I wouldn't buy these for mixing EDM. I have no doubt they would be popular for recording rock bands etc, where you need isolation...

AKG240 are best, IMO. They were/are the industry standard for a reason. BeyerDynamic make some nice, but more expensive, open headphones though too.

This is interesting info. I haven't heard about the new ones so much. Are they as good as the old ones? Whats the difference between the original 240s, the MKIIs and the HDs?

Not much. Mainly just looks. The HD has a fixed cable instead of the detachable kind. The MkII comes with a coiled and a straight cable and two types of pads.

hmm..

AKG K240S or AKG K240 MKII ?

Posted by wing on Nov-11-2008 23:11:

anyone know a good site to order AKG 240S or AKG K240 MKII from? preferably Canadian

Ah fair enuf. Not sure what the point is then, I guess its just marketing...

Posted by EgosXII on Nov-12-2008 00:44:

looking around it seems the MKIIs come with leather AND velvet pads, so you can choose, and also comes with 2 seperate cables, while the 240S(tudio) has a non-detachable cable, and jsut the leather pads i think...

i think sound wise they're the same

I just ordered the k701! Since theres a new model (k702) out, its a bargain atm.

I am pretty poor . How much of a difference will it make between something like the AKG 240s or the sennheiser hd 202's?

You could get the AKG K141 MkII. But the pricing is very retarded. the k141 MkII are $189 and the k240 MkII are $199.
So there's really no point. However if you can still find a k240S they are priced at $119.

Pretty reasonable, at $119. I was looking at the MK2 which are about $200, i understand there isn't much if any difference as far as sound goes between the two models.

Edit: Also, Thanks

http://www.thomann.de/gb/akg_k240_m...artner_id=79570 @ 129squid
this site looks pretty tasty for others looking...
or a US one
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.co...ones?sku=241832 @ 199 dollars
