Herman Cattaneo: Master Series Vol.2 vs Nick Warren: GU#28 Shangai
vs
Which is better album in your opinion and why? For me, it's a tough one...GU# 28 Shanghai has a very strong CD1 but a weak CD2 IMHO. OTOH, CD1 and CD2 of The Master Series V2 are both very very good but don't quite touch Shanghai CD1 IMHO. So I dunno, it's a toss up for me ATM.
Nick Warren's Shanghai was fucking ACE, that's my official view . Do you honestly think CD2 is weak?
Nice one...
I would definitely go with GU: Shanghai. When Masters volume 2 was strong, it was really strong, but had a number of moments on both discs where it felt like things were just chugging along uneventfully.
I felt Shanghai, on the other hand, was consistently solid on both discs, and was infused with some outstanding builders and peak-time Prog. that just made it a more overall enjoyable listen from start to finish.

Originally posted by isamu Well, maybe "weak" was too strong(pardon the pun) a word, but I just can't get into it for some reason. The first half is good. But it ends with such a slow ambient tone. Maybe I need to give it a few more listens. CD1 is simply a MASTERPIECE OTOH! It's flawless in my opinion. Jacob Todd & Kelly Noland's Somehow is probably my favorite song of all time, along with the absurdly beautiful Don't Forget About Me by Way Out West. I could listen to CD1 literally everyday and not get tired of it. |
The masters series vol 2 is one of my favourite mix compilations. Haven't heard GU28 so can't really tell, but it will have to be a really good to beat Hernans mix.

Hmmm... isamu, you wouldn't happen to be a big fan of Daytona and other assorted SEGA racing games, known for getting overly excited on video game message boards, would you?
(disregard this message if you have no idea what I'm talking about!)

Shanghai, every day of the week. Both CDs are immense.
Has anyone heard his latest GU effort? Another master stroke, highly recommended
absolutely love GU28 - hasn't left my car since I bought it many moons ago
6. Starecase - Vapour Trails
7. Seyton - The Drake Equation
those two tracks just kill it for me everytime
And of course I'm still listening to both of these albums on the regular. Shanghai Disc 1 still kicks butt but the last track is kinda meh. Masters 2 is still crazy hot all the way through though.
Still rockin both of these albums like they came out yesterday.
What's another good GU from Nick? Or from any other DJ for that matter?
Try Hernan Cattaneo's "Parallel" if you haven't already...

Originally posted by progtech GU024 is probably Warren's best GU imo. If you haven't heard James Holden's Balance 005, Joris Voorn's Balance 014 or Henry Saiz's Ba;ance 019, you should definitely check them out. |

Looking back, I still maintain that GU: Shanghai is the stronger of the two compilations, but also the more conventional. Depending upon how closely you were following the prog scene around 2005, you may have found few surprises there (through probably with the exception of 'Acperience 1'), and to the tune of pretty much the same steady flow on both discs. Masters Vol. 2 covers more diverse ground with more interesting arrangement, but Warren is totally in his element on GU: 24, and the end result trumps Cattaneo's.
As for other Warren mixes, his downtempo discs are some of his finest work, and are what separate his GU's from most others. The first disc to GU: Reykjavik is a near masterpiece, and continues to age beautifully. Definitely check that one out, along with the first disc to GU: Paris. I get that the prog scene was better for maintaining his international reputation, but I think his real brilliance as a programmer shines when he's working with downtempo.
Great stuff guys. I am taking notes of all of these recommendations. My goal is to eventually collect all of Nick's GU albums.
Have you guys heard his remix of Der Dritt Raum's Hale Bopp? It is absolutely SUBLIME, and is one of my favorite trance tracks of all time.

Herman Cattaneo played a few records from my very own label a couple of years back. It was exhilarating to hear it on his Buenos Aires Radio Show. The man is a legend and has tremendous knowledge and skill behind the turntables.
