Real name or DJ name?

Is it best when starting out to use a dj nickname or your real name?

Or does it really matter?

Posted by Excess on Nov-11-2008 22:03:

dont think it matters. if you're skilled you'll get recognition. :P!

Posted by Imagin on Nov-11-2008 22:44:

Dosent matter to be honest. If you catch on it gets pretty hard to change your name up for people so just go with whatever you feel you want.

Hi, I'm DJ McNutty

I think it depends honestly. First of all though, you need to be comfortable with it. I'm not an expert in this but this is my take on it.

My real name is Sebastian Zander. I hate how that pronounces in english, so I don't use.

I've taken these aliases: Daniel DeLarc and Paulo Da Costa.

They are completely random, taken from those "What's Your blablabla Name?". But i like how they sound so I'll use them.

That is all.

Posted by the_gamemaster on Nov-20-2008 01:49:

IMO Seabastian Zander is way cooler than the two aliases youve made up, sort of similar to sander kleinenberg, in the same way that terry ferminal is similar to ferry corsten. I think that would work pretty well, having a name that sounds similar to a superstar DJ.

I think using your real name shows that you represent yourself and your self expression as a DJ. Using an alis like DJ Cockblocker doesn't say who you are (I'm not saying that your a cockblocker - I'm just sayin')..

DJ names are more of a younger approach to things! Although aliases are great for dj's that spin different genre's - But the name is only good till people figure out your actually dj cockblocker!

(Fuck it i'm tired - I can't even make scense out of what I said lol)

depends...some ppl (i.e. me) have a name that probably wouldn't go down very well as a DJ name lol

i'd say for example that ud rather be screaming "TIESTO" than "TIJS" or whatever his real name is lol

and i dont think using a dj name is a younger approach to things...sometimes u just have an affectionate nickname that ud rather ppl used

$pencer Moneybags III

I'd pay anything up to $4.50 to see someone with that name play

I have been toying with different monikers as a DJ, mostly as of late, and I think some names loan themselves to specific genres, of course this may also be because I write a lot of stories abut raves, so I have a tendency to make up DJ names a LOT. (Although I was going by Dr. Frostbite for a long time, that name has sort of passed, even though I still love it.) I decided I wanted a house name, so I was looking on my made up flier (It was for a series of short stories all taking place in the same rave.) and the name Moses Juggernaut struck me, so I kept it. If you have a name that naturally lends it self to being a DJ, then stick with that, but my name doesn't do that so I have to come up with creative DJ names.

Posted by Stasis on Nov-20-2008 17:09:

I think it's a completely personal choice and one is not necessarily better or worse than the other. A lot of people insist that using a real name is more mature than an alias...but frankly sometimes a real name can be boring and pretentious, where an alias could be fun and more memorable...

Posted by Zild on Nov-20-2008 18:24:

I use my real name when I DJ, but I release stuff under aliases. Mainly because I don't think I'm good enough yet and I don't want to ruin my good name. I'm a perfectionist though, so I doubt I'll ever produce under my real name.

Posted by elFreak on Nov-20-2008 22:50:

i use a fake handle because my real name seems to gypsy like and no one can pronounce it properly.

Posted by Marcus007 on Nov-20-2008 23:12:

maybe you are a gypsy Mr. El Freak

GET GOOD AT MIXING AND SELECTING TRACKS THEN WORRY ABOUT CHOOSING A NAME!
