Conflicts between music and other interests

I love music, but I also have an equal love for books. As a result, I'm never sure how to spend my money and time. Should I get that new CD or buy that new book? Should I read or listen to music?

In addition, there's a conflict for me between buying new music and trying to get more equipment and software for production.

Finally, there's a conflict within my music hobby between electronic music and classical music, my two favorite categories. I love both of them, but of course I have to split money and listening time between the two.

Any of you guys have similar conflicts?

I am reading while listening to music, no problem for me at all!

deep man.

Audio books.

Luckily, I only read about music, so the problem kinda solves itself.

Its always a balance. My time is spent between obsessively collecting music, producing music, wreck diving and mountain biking and now my first kid is on the way, somethings gotta give!!

I usually tend to favour music when it comes to conflicting interests, because it's probably the most versatile interest I have. I do, however, often prioritise films or books (and occasionally games) over music. I'd hate to be someone who only listened to music.

I like reading a lot too, but there's no doubt that music means more to me. So most time & money is being spend on that. I probably would like movies/photography/fashion more if I had more time/money on my hand. I love to sit back and enjoy a good book while having a nice album on during the weekend mmm <3

I used to have this problem, and then I started DJing. Dance music takes up about 75% of my music interest now almost out of sheer necessity.

I still find time for my other hobbies, and in fact, having them take a back seat to music has actually made me appreciate them more. I also feel more creative when I get back into something like photography or writing since I don't spend much time on them anymore.

Sorry but this is a really dumb thread. How the hell are we supposed to help you?

Obviously your going to have these conflicts, but apart from reviews of individual things, we can't really help.

Raise your standards and enjoy both.

Just relax and notice what you actually feel like doing. If you are totally paralyzed by your inability to decide, enter multitask hell.

As an active listener, I personally don't throw on tracks while reading. Then again, I'm browsing this forum while going through my latest crate.

It's funny that I always have music on while reading and posting on here and other sites but if I'm reading a book, the music becomes too distracting for me to absorb the book's contents properly.

i only have 1 interest and thats music, but what i have alot of is loans so i gotta work my ass of giving me no time for music.
books... later in life when im deaf.

I don't have nearly as much time as I would like to spend on music nowadays.
Social life, school, jobs and other things often have a higher priority, even though my love for music will never fade. Nothing to do about that really.. it's all about priorities in the end

I remember when I found production and sorta ditched everything else. It's easier than you think.

Now everything I do is pretty much a means to justify techno.

yeah I actually have the exact same issue. I solve it by getting books from the library (although that never is really the same, the book collection is so much cooler ). I seem to spend a majority of the time these days on the classical music side of things and save my electronic music for when I get a real itch for it, which comes and goes.

And considering what Clovis said, I'm sure if I started djing my interests would lean towards dance music a little more.

Posted by daphunky1 on Nov-15-2008 21:16:

Well I somehow grew up finding my two passions to be electronic music and snowboarding... and ironically that's coming from a very small town where i was the only person who liked edm and a landscape that is completely flat.

I've now moved to a ski town for my second winter so that I can snowboard everyday... and the worst part about this town is the music. They do get a few real dj's here and there to play for a small crowd so that's cool, but mostly its just top 40 edm for tourists. So if I didn't like snowboarding so much I'd definitely be spending my travel-years relocating to some sort of edm hot spot, and my money on dj gear. Oh well.... snowboarding to my favorite tunes is pretty awesome.
