New to trance but interested

Hi everybody,

I've recently started listening to trance, and other electronic music, and I've really been enjoying it. I'd like to to broaden my knowledge generally of trance and trance groups, but the amount of information is daunting. If anybody here has any suggestions, I would really appreciate if you would give them to me. Recently I have been listening to Shpongle and Infected Mushroom, if that helps. Also, since I'm not just interested in trance, any other form of electronic/dance would be encouraged, just please specify what they are.

Thanks,
Alex

First things first:

http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/

despite the sarcasm and some tongue-in-cheek humor contained within the genre descriptions I think this is still the best guide for newcomers to EDM

Definitely don't take it too seriously. And most importantly choose what YOU like to hear.

Hey,

Check out BASIC CHANNEL. this is 'techno'. some people might attach other descriptors to it like 'spacey' or 'dubby' or 'atmospheric'. this is from the early 90s

Posted by nefardec on Nov-18-2008 07:13:

And this is "Wax10001". this is also techno

Posted by nefardec on Nov-18-2008 07:15:

And here is "F.U.S.E." this is techno, may be called melodic techno or ambient techno

And this is Sven Väth, this is trance

Posted by nefardec on Nov-18-2008 07:19:

This is Jam & Spoon - Stella. this is housier trance from 92

This is "The Age Of Love"

This is "Sueño Latino - Sueño Latino" this is euro house

This is Shed - Well Done (033472-edit) more melodic techno with a housier groove

^ Good stuff.

Also, just check out lots of electronic music in general. Ambient, IDM, house, dubstep, techno, drum and bass, downtempo, triphop. Maybe even try out some noise. Don't stick to just current trends: explore all the history, too. There's so much to learn about in the relatively short history of electronic music.

Nefardec's recommendations are A++.

Check out the DJ Promotion section of the forums and sample some sets of different styles. That's how I started broadening my tastes in edm.

I recommend this set to everyone who is interested in listening to other stuff besides the Armin-Tiesto-A&B-PvD Top 40 stuff...

Small step from this to vocal trance IMO.

For some newer stuff check out the Gareth Emery Podcast at www.garethemerypodcast.com.

The guy plays a good selection of Electro, house, and trance.

Check out the classic that I'm jamming to right now:
Phats and Small - Turn Around
very fun house track.

Save yourself even more time and exit dance music entirely.

The original post said "I never moved on to house," not just "I never moved on."

And it's true. I did mostly stop listening to recent trance, but I never got into house very much. I started listening to non-dance electronic music instead, although I still take in the occasional set.
