Kindred Cafe Raided tonite

Downtown coffee house busted for pot

Henry Stancu
staff reporter

Toronto police raided a popular downtown coffee house frequented by medical marijuana users and other cannabis-smoking patrons.

More than a dozen officers converged on Kindred Cafe, on Breadalbane St., near Yonge St. and Wellesley Ave., about 7 p.m. Thursday.

Two people were taken into custody and four others were issued summonses for trafficking and possession of marijuana before police began removing furniture, electronic equipment, coffee machines and paraphernalia used to smoke.

A group of activists gathered outside as police loaded a five-tonne truck and carted away many of the cafe's contents.

The three-storey building has a restaurant on the main floor, lounges on the second floor and a rooftop patio with propane heaters and a canopy where patrons can legally smoke outside. It has been in business since 2000 and sells free-trade coffee beans and pastries, some allegedly laced with cannabis.

"They don't sell any cannabis in this establishment," said an angry Matt Mernaugh, an activist and registered medical marijuana user, who arrived as the police raid was underway.

He was searched by officers and turned away.

"This is just a place for people who use medical marijuana to socialize," he added.

The police need to focus on much bigger issues in this city..we have a serious problem with gang and youth violence..leave the weed smokers alone..seriously..and this coming from someone who doesn't partake..

Posted by Ravist on Nov-21-2008 06:57:

its because the city doesn't care about the gangs and violence, they want the nice area's to keep flourishing as they keep putting money into these areas and taking away from the bad areas because there's no trust fund or investors helping to fix these bad areas. When i used to live in high park, i would see guys cutting the grass, security patrolling and the bad areas wouldn't have nearly as much as these nice areas and they keep continuing getting worse because the city officials really dont give a fuck about those area's because they feel it won't benefit them in any way.

If someone wishes to fix my mistakes as I am not an expert on this topic, please do.

The police will argue that a large number of the drug dealers who distribute marijuana are members of gangs, and that shutting down their business will help curb violence.

Woot woot, answers for everything.

It's a hassle, but Kindred will be back up and running in no time, this is Canada, don't forget. The judge will dismiss the charges.

What a buzz-kill. When the owner got there, he must've been like, dude... wtf?

Aw, this sucks, I always wanted to go...We were gonna do a TA get together for this, the idea was in the air from this summer...Total buzzkill!!!

I've only been to the Hotbox cafe & The Vapor Lounge, I don't think both of them have ever been raided. Cops have nothing better to do, they are honestly running out of things to do. It's like they are saying to themselves screw getting shot by gangsters lets just go bust some pot heads. There is no easy way out.. DO YOUR JOB and get the real criminals off the street !

Posted by RobotHouse on Nov-21-2008 16:20:

FYI: just cause you smoke doesn't make an "activist". It just makes you a pothead.

In an effort to save time and money (Hello, economy!) I recommend the cops focus on more important issues (violence, gangs, keeping the peace) and leave us the f*ck alone!

Then take the drug trade out of the hands of criminals!

Drug consumption is only arbitrarily criminal. Wake up to the accidents of history, people!

The police have wasted enough of my tax dollars ineffectively enforcimg prohibition.

a small part of me died

i think that legalizing marijuana would be the best thing to do for an economy in a recession lol on two levels, both economical and emotional.

That totally sux! I've only been there a couple of times, but it was such a cool place to hang out. It's cool cuz they had smoking equipment/ machines that you couldn't normally buy or use on a regular basis for getting high...
There must be another cafe in Toronto that serves the same purpose... anyone know of any other than Hotbox Cafe?

the logical explanation is indeed that *something* was going on there other than mere marijuana use for medical purposes.

personally, I think it should be at least decriminalized. legalization makes sense, given that alcohol and cigerettes are undeniably more dangerous/harmful substances, but this argument has been rehashed many a time here on TA and the political backlash would be too much to overcome.

educate the uneducated mass

but then, changing the public perception is pretty darn hard to do. and people don't like it when you poke holes in their perceptions and inconsistencies

indeed. give it another generation. the older one is still far too conservative and ignorant...and attaches too much of a 'drugs are bad' stigma to pot.

the pot vs. alcohol and cigs debate, from a personal and public health standpoint, is such a slam dunk at this point (in favour of pot being less harmful) that it's virtually impossible to logically defend the status quo of pot being illegal with booze and cigs being legal.

Posted by ChemEnhanced on Nov-21-2008 18:32:

by the time the Government got their grubby hands on this it would cost like $50.00 for a pack of 25 joints.

Posted by Anas Attia on Nov-21-2008 18:38:

Does anyone know of any legit reason pot is illegal? just curious.
