Two Hour Featured Artist Mix for Proton Radio [Deep, moody, opening hours tech house]

Technically this is airing on Proton as we speak (http://www.protonradio.com), but I need to get to bed some time here soon so I can attempt a brief return to normal people hours this weekend, and I wanted to share this early enough today that if some folks were traveling over the weekend they could grab it.

No other long-winded explanations necessary other than that I'm quite pleased with how this turned out and if I were going out to see a headlining house or techno DJ, this is the kind of music I would want to hear opening the night.

In other words: kids these days need to learn not to play "No Pressure" at eleven-fucking-thirty PM.

In. Tracklist looks real nice.

EDIT: I can't wait to hear how you incorporated 'Breathe' into this mix. Such a classy track.

All over this right now!

Yup. I actually said last year that I had planned to keep it until next Christmas, and now it looks like we're here.

In all honesty, I will probably never change it.

Haha didn't know

As a matter of fact, I only changed it about 2 months ago when I finally overcome my laziness and finally changed it, lol.

As for your mix, I haven't been able to listen to it in its entirety, but I did listened to the first hour on the car but couldn't really put focus on it as I would have liked because I had to keep in on low volume since I drove a guy who's been visiting us from the Denmark office from his hotel to the office and then back.

It did make for nice, moody background music though...which I believe was what you had in mind in the first place when you mixed this, right?

I'll give it a full listen tonight.

Posted by PoisonJam19 on Nov-28-2008 05:25:

On the DL right now. I will post later with some feedback.

Cheers, Az. To be honest, there was basically no planning going into this and I'm pretty sure the decision to play "Requiem for a Dream" pretty much came as a result of me going all "stringy/trancey" for the bulk of the second half of this.

I don't know, definitely tried at times to play records that could probably play as well at peak hour as they can during the opening hours, just in vastly different ways. No idea whether or not it came off that way... or whether I was remotely successful in doing so, but I do know that once again I think this is another "not remotely trance but it's really still kind of trance" mix from me.

Edit: Also, arrogance...
quote:

I should note - the mentality going into this set can best be described as how it is I think opening DJ's should play, at least when it comes to house and techno nights. All too often the past few years it seems like the notion of a "proper" opening slot set has been lost to the Beatport crowd whose record bags are basically identical across the board, banging out bog standard "progressive/tech/deep house" to an essentially empty club. There have been times when it's been almost painful to watch and hear.

I realize that's likely a pretty arrogant statement to make, and assume more than a handful of folks will disagree with it (and with my selections/abilities as an opener), but if you asked me "How would you play an opening hours set?" and you haven't had the (dis)pleasure of seeing me actually play one, this is pretty much it right here for better or worse.

Again, I saw someone opening for Luke Fair play "No Pressure" at 11:30 at night. I cannot stress enough how fucking damaged witnessing bollocks like that the past couple of years has made my view of many other local jocks.

For laife. Don't worry, I'm working towards getting your rocks off sometime soon as well.

After all, for something to be a circle jerk it has to be reciprocal.

This mix is sex, Rob. I've finally been able to get all the way through it, after downloading. I haven't heard 'Breathe' in at least a year, and I thought it was a wonderful closing tune to a really thoughtful mix. Great job, as usual.

Fuck me. You guys really have some shit openers up there ey?

I mean, we have our share of complete tards down here too, but at least for most of the parties I go to (thrown by droog or other friends) they know ho to set people up right or book people who are like-minded in this approach.

I haven't listened to this yet, and while it looks very yummy and interesting (you always have a few tunes I've been playing a lot mixed with a bunch of stuff I'm not familiar with), I tend to like playing much much deeper than this when opening. I probably wouldn't get into much of this stuff till after midnight if the headliner was playing later on.

Got to open a few good nights recently and I basically went through my entire music library, picked out a playlist of 20-30 tunes I'd like to hear when walking into a club and mingling, and burned them to discs.

Unfortunately I have not recorded any of those efforts, but I'm opening for LoSoul in SF in a few weeks so hopefully I can record that, especially since I'm playing the first slot.

120 bpm ftw

I will bop this on the ipod ASAP.
