i'll be tuning in! maybe even the entire night, with a 30 minute nap somewhere mid-way. wish i could be out... but it's crunch time for my thesis with the near-final draft due this monday.. eek! i'm also all delirious from the lack of sleep..

I am freaking out because we got home a little while ago after renting a car and I can't find my ID nor my ATM card...god I hope I didn't leave it at the rental car place at SFO.

If so and they ahve it, back to SFO I go and then to Ten15!

Could get around the night jsut using my passport but I need my ATM card or else tap water with no tips all night!

Dave

no problem. at least the transition on the back end was seamless. went right into a 'euphonic sessions' mix.

It's 1:15am now, but I started writing this at 12:30am...just dealing with Enterprise. No luck finding my card and ID yet. Anyhow, the stream stopped at 12:50...wonder if Mr. Special Guest is on and they couldn't broadcast him....hmm, hmmm....

Anyhow, if I had cash on me and all I'd be fine...but I don't. I have two $1 bills and random change...and it'll have to last until Monday if I can't find my card.

Blurr, if this is you on ETN righ tnow... I have to admit nice set, good track selection, though the feel of it is just reminds me of like 2004 for some reason. Just the style. Not a real complaint...just saying. If any complaint was to be said that pertained to this, would be that it was quite epic/uplifting early...but guess it's a locals night and not a true opening set, so nothing big...just hope whoever played after could lead off it well. Guess it depends if it's Bali or some special guest!

My only real "constructive criticism" is that it seems like during some of the transitions, more than I'd personally like to hear, it feels the track is almost running out before the next track really kicks in. Sure, sometimes the way tracks are built it's the only way to get a smooth transition, but just heard it a bit more than I usualyl do in peeps sets and when that's done you kinda lose a bit of energy...so it has to be rebuilt.

But even that's not a _huge_ deal overall. Just an area where I think you (and I) can both improve.

I've been quiet about my sets lately. I had two major criticisms in the past (from thsoe who are honest). 1. trying to fit too much (in styles) in my set, amking the music sound a bit all over the plae, and 2. Tracks running too long. Almost sounds like I'm starting the next one while one is running out. Energy killer!

So I've been narrowing exactly what I put into each set..more focused. And start shortening the tracks (which has actually been easier than I thought...considering you have to do transitions on more meatier parts of the track). Averaging 2-3 more tracks an hour than I was just a few months ago. Also finding an instant improvement with the flow of the set when I go back and listen to it.

When not in LA, been trying to get opportunities to play at house parties since it seems like someone at my work is throwing one all the time. Just as practice.

I am so far ahead now than I was even six months ago (don't even know how to describe the difference between now and my bleh set at Te15)...I thought I was getting comfy with Ableton then...but the adjustments I've made since getting back into Ableton after my summer-night-of-work have brought me so far along.

One night I'll sit down and do a proper demo mix. Work has been crazy busy (it's Q4) and been in LA a whole ton, but luckily I've at least have found time to practice...just haven't had the time to sit down and figure out how I want to handle a demo mix (one longer set, mutli-CD set...each CD with its own flavor, etc) and actually do it. In the meantime, will just start releasing more mixes while practicing and an house parties I do. Last two I did had a HORRIBLE, super old mixer with integrated CDDJs and a faulty headphone jack...and the sound quality came out like crap. low volume, but still distortion when boosted...but maybe I'll still make it avail.

Anyhow, enough about me (rambling obnoxiously like usual)...back to your set.

Again, I liked your set overall. Yeah, it felt like 2004 to me...but enjoyable nonetheless....at least from my home computer!

Wish I was tehre right now. Should be tehre right now. Prob missing the surprise guest.

Hopefully I get good news from Enterprise so I can go pick it up and run to Ten15. I'll come super late, I don't care. I'm up.

Dave

Ten15 has a camera right? Good internet? Should webcast all these nights using justin.tv or something.

If you want to do something like this...well, I can always help with the technical setup...just if you want good qualtiy, you'll need a good laptop/system to use as the encoder. And a video capture card, but depending on what is needed I can maybe give one if any of my cards I'm not still using work.

Love how some DJs are doing selfcasts...Ten15 should do one itself. Only thing I'd strongly recommend is to position the camera at an angle that gets the DJ and the crowd. Hate when I see videos and it's stuck on the DJ! You get no concept of the energy in the room. Heck, just make the camera mobile and with a table-top tripod so you can just position it how you want.

If you want to do this, let me know what you have and what you need. I can try to help out with any equipment if I don't have an immedaite need for it to get it setup.

Is the stream backup? Metadata says it's 1015 again but I don't recall it kicking back over. Maybe I wasn't paying attention!

this would be cool for maybe a handful of the largest shows of the year, and these days a comcast/cable connection would be able to handle a decent quality stream. and it would be fun from a technical perspective.

The technical issues with something like this isn't usually the end-user. All you'd need, at minimum, is a 300kbps stream. 96kbps for audio, and the rest for video at a lower framerate to increase the image quality (considering it's a dark video with various flashing lights on it).

But,pending some tests, a lower bitrate might even be possible. H.264 is amazing stuff!

Cable is 6mbps+ these days
DSL various, but it's lowest is "upto 1.5mbps*... 368kbps guaranteed, but just about everyone on DSL gets at least 1mbps+...most close to 1.5mbps. But there are various DSL packages with various speeds going upto 6mbps...and cheaper than cable. This said, most poeple on any type of broadband connection wouldn't have any issue with a 300k or 400k stream. At work, we offer 1400k, 700k, 400k, 150k....A few years ago, about half the streams were 150k. Now less than 1% are. Something like 0.4%...mainly split between 700k and 400k now. 1400k on the rise, but will be awhile before it's dominant.

The biggest challenge for somethign like this is 1. the encoding computer, though a 300kbps stream wouldn't require a powerful computer really) and the upload speed. If they have a DSL line, what level of service...upload speeds can range between package. And DSL tends to have lower upload speeds than cable. If it's a business DSL line, might have the same upload speed as download...

Streaming is flexable and you can adjust settings based around your restrictions...always room to lower the bitrate (of the video...drop the bitrate, drop the framerate to maintain image quality), etc. audio is the important bitrate the should be maintained if possible.

Again, something I'd love to help out at least trying. Just need some time there to set it up and test it out on day/night.

We are now live again...

Sorry for the delay folks.

Tune in and let me know things are a ok.

= )

Wow, that cut over sounded like an almost natural transition. Wasn't compeltely smooth, but the track that was playing when it came back on cut out at just the right spot like it was intentional...

That's if it was the cut-over. I'm not even sure.

Blurr, did the special guest play? Can we stop saying "special guest" if so? lol

Posted by Dj Blurr on Nov-30-2008 10:05:

are things back to normal?

Can you guys hear the broadcast?

Taj is on...

Posted by DaveT on Nov-30-2008 10:08:

Is he playing male vocals right now? "the selfish life, makes me weak" ... ?

Sounds like Taj's speed...can see it being Taj.

And fishy how it came back on right when taj got on....maybe that special guest did play abnd you all are keeping quiet!

Posted by 2tall on Nov-30-2008 10:08:

hmm, i just bored enough and want to procrastinate on my paper to do a quick proof of concept now...

Posted by DaveT on Nov-30-2008 10:12:

Whoot, Enterprise found my ID and ATM card...

Now I just need to get my roommate to drive me back there, bring him back home, and then head out...

...or maybe I'll just drive w/o a license, but knowing my luck there will be some checkpoint or I'll be stopped and then I'm realy screwed.

Crap, roommate is asleep...waking his ass up! He better drive me.

Posted by 2tall on Nov-30-2008 10:27:

i'm testing some video streaming from home now. http://www.justin.tv/rafal2tall

testing my camera, if its good in low light. added some flashing light bulb, a red bulb, and blacklight. looks like a limitation of justin tv is crappy sound. but for a 5 minute setup, it works.

Posted by 2tall on Nov-30-2008 10:29:

blurr, sounds like its still the euphonic stream (2:28am). i don't think the 1015 stream was able to get tapped back in.
