Sub-Woofer Recommendations

Hi guys.

I am thinking about getting a sub-woofer for my bedroom studio. Currently I mix on a pair of EVENT TR8s and I then use the Alpine sub in my car as a gauge of the sub-bass in my tunes.

Would you guys mind giving me a few recommendations for a quality yet not too expensive sub-woofer? I'd appreciate some advice

subamps has inbuild variable crossover on the linesignal (before the amplification) so u dont need passive LP-filter on the drive:

I recommend not getting one. They're mostly recommended for 5.1 mixing situations. If you can't hear the sub-bass properly, you should invest in new monitors and/or acoustic treatment.

What monitors go down to 20hz or lower?

I mixed without a sub for years. After adding one I would never go back. Get a sub with a bypass foot pedal so you can turn it on and off on demand. You get the best of both worlds this way.

That's what I run. I have a cheap sub, but I like to know that I have full range (20hz-20khz) at the push of a pedal.

20-30hz should be removed anyway tho

What music (apart from dub/reggae) goes down below 40hz?

For accurate STEREO monitoring, stay away from subs, period. There's no reason TR8's need a sub - there's something wrong with your room acoustics if you're not getting enough bass. If it's for listening though, just get whatever sounds fat and the RP-10 is goodun'.

I forgot you guys are producing trance.

Silly us, forgot we were on dubaddict.com

Seriously though, only dub and reggae go that low. I can't think of any other music that goes that low (nearly all EDM included).

Silly me for offering a solution to the poster's original question. Of course you aren't going to get an accurate subwoofer in a non treated home studio, but if you want something to reference without going out to your car everytime then get a cheap sub and use a footswitch.

Good for you for offering a solution - that's why most of us are here, isn't it?

Why would you need a sub for stereo referencing/monitoring? For listening, if you happen to like a lot of bass then it's fine but not for monitoring a stereo source and especially not to reproduce frequencies below 40 hz because they don't really occur much in EDM.

In addition to psytrance, I write trance where the low end and kick need to be very prominent and I just don't get that with monitors alone. Also the sub has a cross over knob where you can send as much as 200hz and below to the sub, or as little as 50hz and below so you can adjust how much goes to the sub and how much goes to your monitors to fit your needs. There are many other factors at work here such as room layout and treatment so a sub may or may not work for some people.

I agree with you which is why I said the guy should get a cheap sub and put it on a footswitch. I mainly use mine for general listening and for studio parties, but sometimes I do use it to make sure I didn't put too much bass into a song I'm working on.

That's why we use the RP-10. We generally put too much bass in our tracks when we only use the RP-8s.

It also makes the lows alot clearer - the sub isn't turned up very loud at all, but it makes finding bassline notes and such easier IMO.
