Warning, Warning! Winter storm warning for Southern Ontario!
Who is ready for the first big one of the season?

| HEAVY SNOW ON TAP TONIGHT. A COMPLEX STORM IS MOVING INTO SOUTHERN ONTARIO. THIS STORM IS MADE OF AN ALBERTA CLIPPER LOCATED OVER CENTRAL INDIANA LATE TODAY JOINED BY A STRONG TROUGH TO A LOW WHICH IS MOVING UP THE EASTERN SEABOARD OF THE UNITED STATES. THE ALBERTA CLIPPER AND TROUGH WILL COMBINE TO GIVE ANYWHERE FROM 10 TO 25 CENTIMETRES OF SNOW FOR MOST REGIONS. WET SNOW MIXED WITH RAIN OVER SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO WILL MOVE QUICKLY NORTH ACROSS THE DISTRICT AS SNOW THIS EVENING. AS TEMPERATURES ARE HOVERING NEAR ZERO THE ELEVATION OF THE REGION WILL BE A FACTOR FOR THE TYPE OF PRECIPITATION. A SNOWFALL WARNING HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR AREAS EXTENDING FROM LAKE HURON EAST ACROSS NORTHERN PARTS OF THE GREATER TORONTO AREA AND BARRIE TO PETERBOROUGH AND KINGSTON. SNOW HEAVY AT TIMES WILL MOVE INTO THESE AREAS BY EARLY EVENING WITH SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OF 10 TO 15 CM EXPECTED OVER SOUTHERN PARTS AND 15 TO 20 CM OVER HIGHER ELEVATIONS SUCH AS THE DUNDALK HIGHLANDS AND THE OAK RIDGES MORAINE. THE SNOW MAY BE QUITE WET OVER SOUTHERN PARTS WHICH MAY LIMIT ACCUMULATIONS SOMEWHAT. THE GOLDEN HORSESHOE WILL SEE WET SNOW CHANGING TO RAIN THEN BACK TO WET FLURRIES MONDAY WITH SNOW AMOUNTS AROUND 5 CENTIMETRES IN THE CITY CENTRES AND AS MUCH AS 10 OVER HIGHER GROUND AWAY FROM THE LAKE. AREA IMMEDIATELY ALONG THE LAKE ONTARIO SHORE MAY SEE ENOUGH RAIN TO LIMIT ACTUAL ACCUMULATIONS TO A SLUSHY 2 CM OR SO. THE WINTER STORM WATCH FOR THE IMMEDIATE TORONTO AREA HAS BEEN REPLACED BY A SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT AS TOTAL SNOWFALL AMOUNTS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN BELOW WARNING CRITERIA. OVER EASTERN ONTARIO AND THE NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION WHERE A WINTER STORM WARNING IS NOW IN EFFECT SNOW HEAVY AT TIMES WILL ARRIVE BY EVENING AND MAY BECOME MIXED WITH ICE PELLETS AND FREEZING RAIN OVERNIGHT BEFORE POSSIBLY CHANGING TO FREEZING RAIN BY MONDAY MORNING. A HEAVY ACCUMULATION OF NEAR 10 CM OF SNOW AND ICE PELLETS IS EXPECTED BEFORE THE FREEZING RAIN MOVES IN BY MONDAY MORNING. UNTREATED SURFACES IN THIS REGION MAY BECOME QUITE ICY AND SLIPPERY AS A RESULT. OVER AREAS EAST OF GEORGIAN BAY WHERE A WINTER STORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT A HEAVY SNOWFALL WITH TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS NEAR 25 CM IS EXPECTED BY MONDAY. BRISK WINDS MAY ALSO CAUSE REDUCED VISIBILITY IN BLOWING SNOW IN EXPOSED AREAS. AS THE CLIPPER MOVES NORTHEAST ACROSS SOUTHERN ONTARIO TO NEAR RENFREW BY MONDAY..IT WILL ALSO DRAG THE TROUGH WITH IT AND PRECIPITATION WILL TAPER OFF TO OCCASIONAL WET SNOW IN THE WAKE OF THE TROUGH ON MONDAY. STRONG WINDS ARE ALSO QUITE POSSIBLE WITH THIS TYPE OF WINTER STORM AND MAY BLOW TREE LIMBS COVERED IN WET SNOW ONTO POWER LINES..CAUSING POTENTIAL POWER OUTAGES. COLDER AIR FLOODING OVER THE GREAT LAKES ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE WINTER STORM WILL ALSO LIKELY GENERATE MORE SNOWSQUALLS OFF OF LAKE HURON FOR PARTS OF THE SNOWBELT REGIONS BY MONDAY NIGHT AND INTO TUESDAY. MOTORISTS SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR DANGEROUS WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS AND ALTER TRAVEL PLANS ACCORDINGLY. VERY LOW VISIBILITY IN HEAVY SNOW AND LOCAL BLOWING SNOW WILL BE QUITE POSSIBLE IN THIS STORM. PLEASE REFER TO THE LATEST PUBLIC FORECASTS FOR FURTHER DETAILS. |

The salt trucks better be out in full force tonight... the last thing we all need are people driving on the roads who somehow forget their driving skills once they see snow falling from the sky
