Dutch Ban Sale of Magic Mushrooms

A ban on the sale of hallucinogenic or so-called "magic mushrooms" is coming into force in the Netherlands.

The Dutch government says the fungi, which contains the hallucinogenic ingredient psilocybin, can cause life-threatening behaviour.

Last year, a French girl jumped to her death from a bridge in Amsterdam after allegedly eating such mushrooms. Owners of the shops that sell the fungi argue that their trade should be regulated, not banned.

The Dutch Association of Smart Shops fears the ban will put its members out of business. It says there is not enough evidence to prove that the fungi are a danger to public health.

Mushroom-related incidents, requiring the emergency services, have doubled in the past few years, with most cases involving foreign tourists, mainly from Britain.

Many mix magic mushrooms with alcohol and cannabis.

Lol, why does this not surprise me?

I thought they already tried to curb the problem by putting a waiting period of 72-hours for your purchase. That seemed reasonable to me, so that tourists didn't just fly in, get fucked up and fly out.

I'm sure the Dutch will be fine. Can they get around the 'sale'? Grow your own, or buy a coffee and get some free shrooms? lol

I was in Holland in summer 06 and 07 and both times we heard news of "tourists" doing fucked up shit while on mushrooms like throwing TV's from their hotel windows and some other gross stuff. Whatever this doesn't affect my decision to go back and visit as long as the greens are still there for my man to smoke

Posted by StereoPrincess on Dec-01-2008 15:29:

lol. foreigners ruin everything.

they should check passports before purchase so to make sure that you are a citizen of the country.

WTF?!?! This is why hotel windows shouldonly open a few inches for air. LOL

I can't imagine trying to lift a TV while while laughing hysterically.

Fungi + VondelPark = happy times.

Watching couples make out, fish jumping out of the water, drinking a few cans, ahh, good times.

Id say mushrooms are not really the problem but the people and the place they choose to do them in. Can you imagine doing mushrooms in Amsterdam? The fucking bike lanes, traffic, people, trains going in the middle of the road, million of canals, bridges.....

Its even a dangerous city to smoke pot in

Posted by pmoisse on Dec-01-2008 18:08:

Having lived here for almost two years now, yes, it's mostly the tourists getting so polluted that are causing the issues.

Regulation is important. And also the responsibility of the shop itself to not sell to people who already look messed up or drunk.

Damn Brits ruin everything! lol

An additional problem would be that people who buy them when they're not messed up and then not taking them according to their instructions (i.e. taking way more at a time than they should)

that's so funny how you mention that.

It's not THAT bad. you just have to use your fucking common sense, although amsterdam is a bit sketchy. I walked around there [with headphones on] and had enough guys - walking past me with "grabby" hands. WHATEVER THOUGH! it's so easy to get around there, THANK GAWD PEOPLE SPEAK ENGLISH.

why do the brits have to ruin everything? fuck. for those who are british - no need to get offended cause it's the truth [check your history on colonisation]
