Why are all the posts here in English?
I thought Montreal was predominantly French speaking and that the majority in Quebec resented being part of Canada?
and?
and point being?
Beaucoup de gens parlent Francais a Mtl, mais a diminue. Principalement cause de l'immigration je dirais et de plus en plus de monde se crissent de notre franais (qubcois).
Si tu veux une ville qui parle pas mal franais, c'est Qubec
Y'a bcp moins d'immigrants l bas. Je n'ai rien contre les immigrants, c'est juste un fait qu'ils font diminuer notre franais !
yawn...

As a French speaking person, I can tell you that Montreal TA is mostly english simply because TA as a whole is english speaking. There are a number of other message boards in French for the Montreal EDM community.
The majority of Montrealers are French speaking, although they tend to all have some English (some can only say yes no and maybe, while the majority are easily able to maintain a conversation, and a large part being almost bilingual [especially the younger ones]).
There has been some fear of French disappearing in Montreal and this feeling has been used by some political movements to gain support. The fact is that French is regressing, but a lot less rapidly than some might say.
The "Charte qubcoise de la Langue franaise", also known as Law 101, has played a vital role in reinforcing French's place in Quebec society, the most important element being the integration of immigrants in Qubcois culture.
Although this law is still somewhat controversial with older English speaking people, the vast majority of intellectual (sociologists and linguists) and the vast majority of the English speaking population now recognize the importance of this law to maintain the Qubcois culture.
After all, even if most Quebecers will not admit it, they are a lot closer culturally to the USA and Canada (consomption, pop culture, etc) than to Europe.
The only really different cultural trait we have is French and it is why it is so strongly defended. Oh, and also we are a little more leftist and environment friendly, but we like to say this to ourselves yet we do fuck all about the environment.
That's it on Quebec 101.
Now, as you can imagine, it is a lot more subtle and precise than this, but you have the bigger picture
oh and
Please don't listen to Neo Hacker.
The scared isolationist racist movement is not widespread in Quebec.
Welcome to immigrants. We need them badly or else this country will turn into Russian (size-wise) Haiti (poverty wise). Without immigration, we are teh fail.

Heh. Is it true that without immigration, Quebec's population would regress? Like not enough francophones having babies?

He was a nice guy too, he just did not know how to speak eloquently. Maybe it as all the whine he drank on that october evening.
you calculate the growth rate of a country/province/wtv by adding natural growth (births - deaths) with international migration (in - out) and provincial migration (in - out)
since forever the provincial migration rate is negative, both natural growth + international migration rates are positives, they say that the the population growth rate of Quebec will start to be negative in 2040, but if you take out the immigrants it's going to be in 2026
so before you bash immigrants or whatever you should know about what you are talking about neo hacker
around 60% of the immigrants are accepted for economics reasons, 30% for family and another 10% are refugees
and btw every developed nations have demographic problems, so stop saying thats Quebec fault and all that shit
Also it is not only Quebec that suffers from immigrants that do not try to adapt to the culture of their new home. Every nation that allows immigration has these same problems. It is a very small price to pay to be able to have people to do the jobs most Quebecers think they are too good for. we need these people, because Quebecers in general are very lazy workers.
Keep in mind that alot of immigrants who come to quebec come there specificially because they come from french speaking countries...ei lebanon and alot of african countries and others i cant remember...quebec doesn't get many somalians because they speak english...
The fact is though many immigrants who come from former french colonies also speak english...and english is the easiest langauge to communicate in so it's only natural for it to start to dominate.
English's dominance in the world is not only from historical reasons but also the simplicity of the language for communication...
English people could argue that the quality of english has gone down since immigration from non english speaking countries increases but we don't. This is generally because french are whinning babies, and this goes back a thousand years.
Just look at strike rates in france...the french will always complain. It's part of their culture.
I guess we're just not on the same page for that
Doesn't matter really...I believe what I think and I was expressing my opinion. Sorry if this insulted people, that was not the point.
Anyway I'll just leave that topic alone
