Internet security override

Fuck, my office installed a VPN client on all laptops and now I cannot download anything while using an external connection, i.e. my home internet connection. To download stuff I must first log in to the VPN. Is there any way to override these settings?

Edit: This is the message I get when trying to download stuff from direct links.

I click yes and try to save in My Documents, and I get the same message again.

When I try to download from Megaupload or similar servers the download won't even start

Yes, I can save anything, anywhere. It's just downloads that I cannot save on any folder. It just occurred to me, which folder does YouTube use to store temporary files? Because I reckon I should be allowed to download stuff there since I can still watch videos.

c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\temporary internet files\content.ie5\

Well there is a group policy that you can turn off downloading (not just browser downloading, but actual downloading) from IE. I am sure that is what they did.

By the way...I'm not using IE, I always use Firefox.

Well they can still setup a security template for FF also. Something I am sure they have done.

And the only way to turn it off would be to stop authenticating to the domain. Otherwise it is unstoppable.

Do you guys also use Exchange?

Do you mean like logging in to the computer instead of the domain? For example, to log in to WRCBGTGMTLT041 instead of /CRB (which is my domain)?

Oh yeah, and I do have admin rights to my own computer (and I think on a network level as well). For example, I can add users, change settings, etc.

And no, we don't use Exchange.

WTF then they suck. run gpedit.msc and see what happens. If this works without error, they are fucking fools.

Something really weird is going on...whenever I try go to "Run" it says it cannot create a shortcut and if I would like to create in in the desktop instead...same thing with "Search".

Is there another way to run the gpedit?

you can browse to it. it is in the windows folder somewhere. also you can hold the windows key and press r and that will bring up the run dialog.

Just use a password bootdisk CD to change the admin password on the laptop. I have used this many times and works like a charm. Obviously since you can't download you will have to get someone to burn the .iso onto a CD for you first.
