Sad Pc starting to lag - help please!

I recently bought a super fast Quad Core Pc - with 3GB of ram, and it was running cubase SX allowing me to open loads of VST's at once (more than I need so didnt find out how many exactly!)

Anyway - the other week I think I inadvertantly downloaded a trojan horse dropper - that kept causing my PC to re boot - and wouldnt allow me to run AVG etc.

I think I managed to get rid of it - as there is no more reboots, and it does not show on any scan (safe mode etc).

The problem is - that now when I am running Cubase - even if I have only a few VST's open - it lags and stutters really bad. I think my whole PC is a lot slower than previously too.

I was wondering if any of you know of a fix that I need to do to help my PC run at full speed again?

PS - When I open task manager it says am still only using 8% of my processor power

Here's hoping.....

the best thing to do mate is completey uninstall the hole lot and start from fresh. sounds shit i know but when a virus attacks the pc even when it has been removed. can cause problems still because it fucks up the registery in the pc.

have you a cd virson of windows or was it already installd on the pc?

It was pre-installed, but I have the original disk it was installed from.

My worry is that I will lose all my software etc I have painstakingly built up over the last few years!

Unfortunately, this is probably going to be the best solution. I understand your reluctance to do this this for the reasons you mentioned, but once you have been invaded by a malicious piece of software, your only guarantee of getting rid of it is a complete reinstall.

In the future, it may be advantageous to make sure you are prepared for these types of eventualities by storing all original installation files and serial numbers in a safe place so that you can easily reinstall in the future.

Mmmmm - doesnt sound too promising then....!?

Has anyone had any experiences with the Recovery Console?
Is it possible to fix things with that?

Maybe, but there are no guarantees with that. In my experience, reinstall is the only way to be certain.

I havent tries a restore yet though - you think that might work?

sometimes you can get away with it but a virus attack can also get into the restore files as well.

Be smart man, do a reinstall. I know it's a risk and a PITA, but you'll be better off in the long run.

best thing to do is try the system restore and see but like i said above a virus cam live in the restore part of the pc as well.and like what happend to me lose the lot because certen virus's can be prgramed to take out windows.

best thing is save all key components of all your music software, samples, projects ect on do a seperate hard drive/cd's and do a fresh install of windows.

if you need me to see you through this let me know.

format everything and re install. its not that much job really once u have done it a few times. i do this altealst once a year now as i use it for both gaming, music, internetsurfing, mediacenter, torrenting movies etc etc. i use it for everything so i assume it will collect a good amount if shit during one year, so i just format everything sometimes. eventho its not slow i do it, eveything just feels fresh and u start making better and faster backup-routines too.
