The Kiss of Deaf

A young Chinese woman was left partially deaf following a passionate kiss from her boyfriend. The 20-something from Zhuhai in Guangdong province arrived at hospital having completely lost the hearing in her left ear, said local reports.

The incident prompted a series of articles in the local media warning of the dangers of excessive kissing. "While kissing is normally very safe, doctors advise people to proceed with caution," wrote the China Daily.

The doctor who treated the girl in hospital was quoted in the paper explaining what had happened. "The kiss reduced the pressure in the mouth, pulled the eardrum out and caused the breakdown of the ear." The chorus of warnings was echoed by the Shanghai Daily, which wrote: "A strong kiss may cause an imbalance in the air pressure between two inner ears and lead to a broken ear drum."
The young woman is expected to regain her full hearing within about two months.

A sucking-kiss on someones ear and having an affect on your hearing makes sense...but the mouth? that's just weird.

You're ears, nose and throat are all interconnected. You can blow air out through your ears if you plug your nose, close your mouth tight and attempt to force-exhale. Do it too fast and it can hurt, and possibly damage your eardrum.

So yes, it IS feasible that a hard, sucking kiss could, in fact, suck an eardrum back.

Any scuba or deep snorkeler like me can tell you how much pressure hurts if you don't blow air up your own ears as you're going down.

YES!! If you do not equalize by plugging your nose and blowing the pressure out your ears every 1 metre while descending during scuba diving you will do serious damage to your ears. I've been fortunate (and careful) enough not to damage my ears but my dad did because he descended too quickly thinking he was above the equalization laws and he suffered for about one year after.

Sinuses are all interconnected peeps. Not sure if a kiss could cause ear damage but it's possible?

You have to do the same thing when you Skydive, as I found out lol. I forgot to do it as I was going down, so once the chute opened I couldn't hear anything. I had to keep popping my ears to release the pressure and slowly I could hearing again lol.

I don't remeber that happening to me...mind you, I wasn't really thinking about anything but falling and just enjoying the view after the chute went.
