A group of companies from Toronto's entertainment district has stepped forward to help ensure than city residents will have a free ride home on the TTC this New Year's Eve.

The companies have donated a total of $60,000 to the effort.

""After a night of celebration, it is our aim to help ensure our patrons arrive home safely," said Nick Di Donato, president and CEO of the Liberty Entertainment Group in a statement.

"Our customers well being is always our number one priority. This initiative will make their trip home easy and safe, by providing them with complimentary TTC service. Our hope is that this initiative will continue for many future New Year's Eve celebrations. "

The Toronto Transit Commission said it requires $85,000 to make the free service happen, but chair Adam Giambrone said they were "pretty optimistic we'll be able to offer the same level of free New Year's service as last year."

CTV Toronto originally reported the free ride might be in jeopardy after the 2007 sponsor, Capital One, dropped out this year.

About 100,000 people use the TTC between midnight and 4 a.m. on Jan. 1.

"Covering it certainly got the word out," Giambrone said. "It was never our intention to do that specifically but sometimes TV can be very helpful in those regards."

The Liberty Entertainment Group is spearheading the effort, along with Molson Canada. The owners of the Guvernment nightclub complex and the Firkin group are also contributing.

Other companies may yet come forward.

MADD Canada is among those who hopes the program goes ahead this year.

Carolyn Swinson lost her father and eldest son to drunk drivers, and said riding transit on New Year's Eve is important.

"It gives people a great opportunity in the city to go out and know they can get home safely," she said.

An official announcement on whether the program will go ahead will come at the TTC meeting on Dec. 17.

its a good gesture but i really think this shouldve been a city provided thing sans funding...new years eve is such a chaotic time until easily 5 in the morn...no cabs available, people going crazy cos of the cold...free transport for a few hours shouldve been a given...

oh wait...then again, they'd prolly go on strike...

god, you're an idiot. it doesnt matter how many venues they own or how much money they have, donating money to help people have a free and safe ride home on NYE is not something they are obligated to do.

its just like donating food to charity (or donating anything to charity). people with good hearts will give up something of their own to help others. thats all that matters.

Exactly...I think its very admirable and generous of them to do this. Hopefully some other people/companies will step up so they reach their target

Well, it could help with any lawsuits against them when they let someone leave their establishment drunk. They do have a legal liability to make sure people do not drink too much in their establishment and do not drive home drunk.

Look at all the ingrates coming out of the woodwork. You could report that these people cured cancer and theyd still flame them.

IMO the TTC should do this for free out of the outrageous taxes that Toronto collects. However, since they don't, I am really happy that companies such as capital one in the past, and entertainment companies present are stepping up. Also this might help the relationship between entertainment and the city that has been very strained in recent times due to political pressures. Now that the condo craze is subsiding, perhaps the clubs can revitalize during the recession much like what happened here in the early to mid 90s.

Do streetcars run holiday hours on NYE? (ie once an hour or something else equally inconvenient?) I'll likely be relying on a streetcar if I have to use the TTC on NYE.

people getting drunk on NYE does not just happen at his events. they happen EVERYWHERE. at least charles and nick are nice enough to step up and offer people an option to get home safely.

+1. I think they city should do it themselves, but since their not, big ups for the companies who are making this happen.
