Read This! something lots of ppl could benefit from...perhaps

Now that the school year is closing up for us (at least North America i'm certain), exams are starting. Fuck i hate exams.
SO... i've always had problems with getting down to studying before the final. What I'm asking is... how does everyone else study?
tell your methods of memorizing, studying, etc... i'm curious and need help. thnx.

I usually just go over my notes again, do some practice problems (if applicable) all while listening to some music that DOES NOT HAVE WORDS. Then I listen to that CD right before the exam, and its like I just read everything. But if theres words in the music, I get distracted and I can't remember as much.

And this has worked for me. An "A" average the last 3 semesters in college

Previous Exams, that is what you need to study.

What the other person said makes a lot of sense...I associate certian things with songs very easily, like I can see the exact ramp I was on on the highway in Portland Maine when I first heard the song rock superstar... as for studying though if this doesn't work for you then here are my techniques that have worked very very well over the past bunch of years...

Math: Do problems. Don't memorize formulas...be able to re-derive simple ones and that shows you really understand where they came from. Practice re-deriving formulas, but mostly just do hard problems and do them thoroughly...then check them with other people who have done the same ones...

Science:
Biology: Flash cards are the best way to remember all those
latin words and other small things to memorize... also, make
charts of organizing your information and have a friend quiz you
on different sections of the chart. Or cover them up with a
piece of paper and quiz yourself

Physics: See 'Math'
Chemistry: See 'Math' and 'Chemistry'

History/Humanities: Discuss the issues involved on the test with someone who knows a lot about it. This sort of thing can completely get you in the right mindset for having ideas for in-class essays, remembering facts for short-answer stuff, and basically everything you need in history. Personally, I hate history and reading but I do as best I can when I have to, this is why I don't have more suggestions for you though...

hope this helps, good luck on your exams...

i have the inherant inability to study. ever. in my life.

Good to see this post! I have a examining session right now.
When the subject is theoretical I read the notes first, and then again, but very carefully so I can remember as much as possible. And I need complete silence during this! No music, no noisy neighbours etc.
When it's a practice subject, like maths, I turn on a liveset (right now it's Ferry Corsten - Live @ Rosenmontagsrave 2001, awesome though), quietly, and make exercises.
That's the best for me.
If you are very determinate you can always use speed, I've never taken it, but some of my acquaintants have, and they say it works.

this is what some hardcore crazies do in university. take ritalin... that drug for people with add. it really works. keeps you focused and motivated, kinda like what happened to bart when he took focusyn, =P. i've never tried it, but apparently, it works really well, but can cause depression after...

another thing, get SLEEP. i studied for 36 hours straight for a calculus exam, then did the 3 hour exam. it was pretty bad... almost 40 hours no sleep. well... stupid me did it again for my physics exam too... so yeah.. haha.. crammin doesn't work in university, =(. it USED to work in high school...

if you ARE cramming though, and you really wanna stay up and study hardcore. take the ritalin option. or, a cheap way to stay up late when no coffee is available, is smoking... hehe.. i took up smoking during exams.... fucked me up bad though... stupid asthma, =P

I use reference cues. What I do is I pick a song for each course. I then listen to that song on loop while I study. I then burn the CDs with the tracks. As i go through my day, I play that song as im taking the test. Youll be amazed at what the other parts of your brain remember this also works for smells too

Those replies about using non-vocal music to relate to the material sound like they're gonna work. It makes sense! thnx!
