for those that use logic 8

do you know how to map your midi keyboard to say - a high pass filter, so that when you turn those nobs and ride those faders, the parameters change?

If so. Please

Teach me

Nice, didnt know about that myself!
Farris, is there a way of automating inserts on aux buses?
Ive tried to find an answer on the net, and in the manual - but no luck yet.

once you select the touch or latch automation mode on that bus channel, it will appear in the arrangement, put the mode back to read and you can draw your automation lanes.

if it doesn't work: go to the mixer environment, select all busses, and check the "icon" box in the inspector, so the icon appears. Go back to arrangement, select a blank track, and change its properties, select mixer=> aux/bus whatever. There you go.

Ahh.. Great! Thanks! It was right there all along.
This has annoyed me quite a bit.

Posted by farris on Dec-21-2008 16:20:

As Lolo said....or go to the Mixer > right-click the desired Aux bus > select 'Create/Select Arrange Track' (top first option) > go back to arrangement and you'll see there is a new track for the Aux bus. Hit A on your keyboard and it'll show all automation lanes. From there pick the parameter you want to abuse.

Thanks guys. Logics automation is the best Ive come across yet!
I just couldnt figure out how to automate the aux inserts.
Thanks again! Now Ive got complete control. Mwahaha!

mmmmh, I'd go for Ableton's automation though as the best one I've seen.

It's too hard drawing steps in logic. If I could have step automation I'd be reaaaally happy.

The automation in Ableton is good but would love snap to grid and bezier curves. The last one is something Logic does have in a minimal kind of way with the smooth curves.

Care to elaborate a bit more on the step automation part? Don't think Ableton has that or does it? And what exactly do you find hard when drawing in automation in Logic?

Automation in Fl studio is fantastic. I guess everyone thinks that whatever they are using has the best automation.

+1

I love the automation in Ableton, and I miss that ease of use in Logic.

Ableton does snap automation to grid actually (as long as you have "snap to grid" turned on) and it works much better for me than in Logic, where it seems near impossible to do the kind of step automation as in Ableton. Logic is often too complicated with it at moments that I just want to do something really simple, or maybe I'm just missing some simple tricks.

Curves is probably the only thing Ableton is missing with automation. I hope they add it in the next version.

It does? I'm still on Live 6 so unless this has been a feature of Live 7, I'm not looking in the right place. The only way of coming close to snap to grid for me is selecting the range in the arrangement, then drag the automation line so it'll place two dots perfect on the two outer grid lines of the selection.

Logic has this as well, just turn on "Snap to Absolute Value" from the "Smart" menu on the top right hand corner. You'll need to do it both on the Arrange window as well as the Matrix view. I just wish they turned it on by default.

This is the one reason why I prefer Logic automation to Ableton. You can do some really cool things with automation curves, especially if you use the automation like an envelope.

But the snap doesn't always work that well...
I have the "Snap to absolute valua" and stuff, but still it might go all wrong in LP8. Not nice

Ok guys.. One more question!
Ive tried to get this to work, but need assistance.
Is there a way of grouping tracks together in a folder?
So if you have 5 tracks with percussion, you can just drop
all of those in a folder, to get things neat and organized?

Yes it's absolutely possible, you should see this feature explained somewhere in the pdf manual that gets installed along with logic (use preview's search assumed that you enabled spotlight). I don't use it myself as I tend to render almost everything to audio and mix tracks together. You want me to look for you??

ahh I see how its done now. I guess I always should RTFM before asking questions.

I didn't quite understand that...
Can you explain more what do you mean by this?
Do you mean that you want to put your songs/tracks that use similar percussions in to same folder?

I believe he means putting all percussion tracks in one folder for better overview.
Very handy on big projects.

Posted by Lana on Dec-23-2008 21:23:

Ok... I think I get it now, lets try again:
1. I choose some cool percussions
2. I put them in to one track
3. I'll put this track in one folder where I'm going to put/save all tracks with other cool percussions

Did I get the idea now?
And I can do the same with kicks, claps, snares...?

If u have 20 percussion tracks in your arrangement, you put them in a folder called `percussions` and when u close the folder it takes up the space of 1 track as opposed to 20.
