can be bloody annoying.
I wanted to post this set in one of the appropriate download thread.

unfortunately, people dont download unless u put the correct set of genres in the post and a tracklisting (ugh i hate people that demand tracklists)

You're a producer and you hate when people want track lists???

Track lists should ALWAYS be posted when possible to give credit to the artists hard work. How would you like it if a dj was playing your music and wouldn't reveal who created it.

Track listings are handy. The below applies more to "Promo mixes/Studio mixes" than "recorded at the club mixes"

1. Give credit where credit is due - a DJ may have put the tracks together, but some credit should be given to the artists in the mix. If it's a live PA or 100% your own material, then fine - can skip out on the trackliting, but holding it like a closely guarded secret is silly.

If it's a DJ I've never heard of before, a quick skim at the track-list can usually give a sense of "is this worth checking out or not?" as I can get an idea of what the mix will be like from the producers / record labels in the mix. Something featuring a lot of stuff from Get Physical I'd probably pass over, but if I see Ghostly on there I might give it a peak.

3. Going back to #1 - but, if I like your mix, download it and like it - I'll use the tracklist as a starting point to going out and discovering some new music. This is how I first started to discover techno - download a set I like, flip through the tracklist, boom - loads of new producers and labels to flip through and discover new music. Or, if its a tracklist of stuff I have no idea WTF it is, that can also get me downloading it, as I tend to like new stuff.

Odly, while I would like to know if a set is house/minimal/techno/psy, if people start to get TOO specific in their genre listings - I'm more likely to skip it than to check it out (tribal-minimal techno dub or whatever), as that strikes me of being a bit too try-hard, and most likely too limiting in the sounds of the tracks they chose if they can narrow down an entire sound of a set to such a specific sub-sub-sub genre.

But, if someone is a DJ, and they want to get their mix heard by as many people as possible to help promote themselves - the best way is to let people know what they are going to be listening to, which to me means

1 - a general sense of the genre in the mix. Is it techno / house / trance / breaks / jungle? getting all sub-sub-sub genre is a no go for me, but give me a basic idea.
2 - a track-listing that will spike my interest and get me to download it

You're in the business of getting people to listen to you - so why not make it easy for someone to decide if they want to listen to you or not?

if someone likes a certain track in a mix of mine and they ask, i tell them

why i hate putting tracklists:
a) people pre judge a set based on how many tracks they know or dont know
b) ive had people go out and get almost every track in promos of mine and play them out themselves
c) if people already know your style, they should download the set regardless if they have previously liked your stuff with the expectation of it being good...

I have gladly put CD text on my promo cds but not listed the tracks on the cover.

Credit is given, people listen to the cd without any hangups, im fine
