REVIEW: SOULSTICE @ Sound Academy

Just got home how, I was there for a couple hours and to be honest I didn't think it would've been my cup of tea along with a sore back from shoveling the day before. But amazingly I was really impressed with D.A.V.E. the drummer, his style of techno is really awesome and kept me going for a while lol. I wish I could have stayed longer but meh. It was great seeing a bunch of people out! Knox, Cribby, Swift, Veronica, Justin, Andrew (briefly lol), Stefan, Sarah, etc! Nice meeting you too Graham! Bed time now. Good night!

*zero* energy in the main room anytime I ventured in. Carter and Honey were 'ok', but granted I didn't hear too much of their sets. so many people seemed to just be standing around.

OS2 played some classics in the back early on...but the breaks room *completely* made the night for me and I had a blast back there. Big League Chu and Dave Saddler were f'n great. what an awesome little room for a party!

Liam... nice to have a fellow breaks fan to hang with for much of the night. good times! Alex...cool to see you after so long, but you deprived the room by not being on the dance floor, lol.

Docks is such a great venue...flawless in terms of lineup, bars, washrooms, coat check, etc.

Worm Popper

Well, it really was a shame that D.A.V.E, Scummy and Stone played to a grand total of 100 people through the course of the night. Their music was more my cup of tea than the chuggy Chicago House for most of the night, but it's hard to get into a proper dancing mood when things are so sparse.

Honey finished the night well, but teased us with Boney M's Rasputin, and never delivered. I swear it was that track.

More later.

sadly, i didn't get to attend last night...working late plus, not so great road conditions and the fear of worse conditions early sunday, kept me away..

so far it doesn't seem like i missed too much...

Posted by LKD on Dec-21-2008 16:52:

things i didnt expect

a) Such a poor turnout
b) Derrick Carter not pleasing at all
c) Honey Dijon being better than Carter
d) a very drone vibe

things that were good

a) was able to retreat for some awesome breaks while Carter bored the main room
b) finally meeting MarkT
c) Having a good time overall despite the previous 4 points

I think the weather was a major contributing factor this weekend...

Posted by devnull on Dec-21-2008 18:02:

The weather was such a downer last night. The drive up to TO was not fun. Starting in Burlington, it got crappy. Then the drive back was a nightmare...ended up taking a room in sauga as the road was fully white and thick.....

The docks, as usual has a slow coat check, but not as much as a clusterfuck as the last time I was there 2 years ago. Using groovetickets for my tix turned out to be a giant pain in the ass, their reader would not read the barcode..so i was stuck at the entrance for 15-20 mins till they get the manager or sumthin

dave the drummer started slow and played house...and then moved to HARD techno, which I quite enjoyed. He got me in the groove for the evening

Carter was the highlight for me. always enjoyed his stuff and finally got to see him last night. He rocked me for the most part of his set and slowed down towards the end.

Dijon picked it up well. Now I understand the hype surrounding her. She was really good. However i found there was too many buildups that didnt lead to much.

It was nice for a change to listen to something else to techno n minimal for a night !

Bring those 2 in a more intimate venue and it will be a killer!

Music 9/10
Friends 10/10
Weather 0/10!

Honey was at Footwork not too long ago and was amazing...definitely more suited for smaller, intimate venues. Mirror Ballroom at Circa or the Orange Room at Guv would be other solid options.

I should clarify my 'zero energy' comment. I think going from upbeat, funky breaks to proper house probably had something to do with my perception. Honey, in particular, was spinning good stuff. I just wasn't feeling the more chill vibe in the main room.

weather had to be an issue. apparently several other venues were not nearly at capacity? I'm guessing that anyone outside the downtown core might have been nervous both at their own potential travel drama and the possibility of no-shows?

oh well...fun night, great crowd, and awesome to meet some new people and see several others who I hadn't seen in quite some time.

I had a great time last night at SOULSTICE! The weather definitely scared some people from coming out and although the energy was lacking at times it still felt like an Industry party! Definitely felt kinda nostalgic. Met with alot of people that rarely come out.. that was awesome! The music was lacklustre(in my opinion) at times but it was still a fun party.

I think Honey Dijon stole the entire night, I had an absolute blast grooving to her tunes. Loved some of the tribal she let out through those speakers - I love her driving basslines!! Song of the night for me:

Marlon D - Jesus Creates Sound (Original Mix)

She had it looped with some diva house vocals it was great!!

I believe the main room at the docks was PERFECT for her style, and it most definately had a "mirror ballroom" -like atmosphere with the decorations and lighting although the sound would be a bit different.

Great party tunes, great group of friends and lots of dancefloor space = one night to remember!

Love Poundin' Sensation

SO HAPPY to have seen D.A.V.E. The Drummer again (finally)!! !! !!

Heard some amazing techno. Had the time of my life dancing to techno!

Got to discuss Henry's (D.A.V.E.) set with him afterwards.

Very, very impressive night! <3

Feel so contented today. Great evening! (Though leaving in the snow storm was a TOTAL buzzkill!)

More later (i hope lol )

took my buddies out and they did not want to goto footwork

they told me it's not big enough sooooo we get to sound academy before it got filled up... i am such an idiot I try to go through the exit doors and these two cops are looking at me like wtf?? LoL..this sweet girl gave me and my buds half price tix! bonus!

first tune of the night i liked was motorcycle as the rush comes.. not sure who played it.. then dave the drummer comes on..FOOT STOMPIN TIME it was fun dancing w/ya jamie!

the house room was very good and had lots of room at the back.. there was one of the funniest moments last night when my buddy had this Tranny touching him and told him 'i cam here with someone but i want to leave with you' ahahah... I am like DOOD that is a transvestite ! he was shocked! I have only seen this one other tranny @cz jokes.. i felt really bad for the drunk guy grinding her...ummm i mean him! hahah

oh,, does anyone have the mix that honey was playing that had kanye west 'love locked down'

sik

edit:
maybe this one:

To start, we walked in and I was shocked at how empty it was there (given, the docks is a large venue, but it didn't even come close to filling up for the night). But hey, that means more room to dance!! The best part of the night for me was DEFINITELY D.A.V.E., he impressed me so much, looooooved the HARD FAST techno What set the mood for me was that he dj before D.A.V.E. was playing some trance (which i was not at all expecting to hear that night at all!)
We ventured over to the main room afterwards and caught Derrick Carter and Honey, and I really have to say they impressed me...I was finally able to unleash my inner house head!! Derrick played some funky Chicago house beats, which I really enjoyed, and Honey finished off the night just right.
Overall, AWESOME times with AWESOME friends!! Really nice to meet you Graham, Liam, Andrew and Jenny No regrets whatsoever about this night!!!
And thanks to our awesome personal trance dj (Vince) after the club

Here's some videos I took of D.A.V.E. (as per your request Jamie!!)

Posted by SWFT on Dec-22-2008 07:51:

Last night was a lot of fun, D.A.V.E was crazy, dont think i've been to a techno party before but it was a lot of fun. Stone afterwards had some awesome beats but the crowd...or lack of crowd was a major buzz kill.

Honey D was great to hear, really surprised me and tied the night with D.A.V.E for stealing the show

..was it worth $40 admission...well it was a lot of fun....but $40 yikes

What a great night. I love the vibe in the main room and the set up and decor was great. Plenty of room to dance all night long.

Got there first thing to see Andrew at 10. Great set once again man. Chuggy techiness to the max. Got me dancing nice and early.

Then on to check out Matt C. I saw him last at the Industry Reunion a couple of years ago and hearing him again was definately a treat to the ears.

Derrick was decent... the Chicago funkiness was there, but I wasn't fully loving every minute of his set. I wanted Honey.

She ripped it up. Banging it out. Tunes. Her energy behind the decks is ferocious. The sound system was working very nicely in the main room on Saturday night which really made for a great night of clear music. Based on the turn of event for Friday night, I am glad I made it out this weekend to get my dance on.... and it was a great success.

I had so much old skool fun.
I didn't want to leave.
But bad weather was forcing me to go home at around 4am
and I made it back to Collingwood by 6:30am~ish.

For me Derek Carter was the most fun to dance too.
I was enjoying the house music all night long.
Same with DJ Tasc his set in the breaks room was so much fun to boogie too.

My favorite quote of the night was....
"Someone only give me half a pill... I'm 40 now " !!
hahahah... I saw such a great mix of people.
Some people I hadn't seen in like 10 years.

Favorite hugs of the night was with Jenn Star & Jamie

Thanks to Dmonic, Big League Chu, Tasc, Saddler, & Farbs
for all the fun in the breaks room.
It sure got messy in there and my night was awesome.

Thanks also to Destiny and Industry for coming together for us.

My set @ Soulstice!! (dark w/ audio)
