Crackdown on rave parties
THE Brumby Government has declared war on rogue rave operators after more than 30 people suffered life-threatening drug overdoses at a Festival Hall dance party.
Rave-party organisers with bad records who allow drugs to flourish at their events will be denied permits under tough new sanctions planned for the industry.
Permits will be harder to get for other operators after dozens of party-goers fell seriously ill at the Christmas Kandy rave, which finished early yesterday.
A bad batch of the killer drug GHB, also known as GBH or Grievous Bodily Harm, was blamed for the emergency.
Twelve party-goers were taken to city hospitals in a serious condition, while others were taken to emergency departments by friends.
They suffered fits, breathing problems, dehydration and hyperthermia - a heat-related illness that also can kill.
Consumer Affairs Minister Tony Robinson issued a warning to the dance party industry through the Herald Sun.
"If promoters are out there running events that are unsafe, then they are going to find it a lot harder to get a permit in the future," he said.
"I'm putting them on notice."
Ambulance officers were overwhelmed as they ferried party-goers to the Royal Melbourne and Alfred hospitals during Saturday night.
It took eight paramedics and ambulance staff to restrain one man.
Ambulance officers are alarmed the toxic batch of GHB has arrived as the music festival season gets into full swing.
Next week's Sensation party at Telstra Dome is expected to attract tens of thousands of party-goers.
Mr Robinson said the number of casualties on Saturday was unacceptable.
"I expect, and I think the community expects, that if these events are going to be held, they are done so in an environment that is safe for the people who are attending," he said.
"I'll be having private discussions with the Director of Liquor Licensing this week about tougher sanctions and stricter permit conditions but this is a warning that they are on notice."
GHB claimed its first fatality in Victoria in 2005 when nurse Belinda Davey died in a drug dealer's car outside a city dance club.
Ambulance Victoria operations manager Paul Holman warned it was only a matter of time before another party-goer died.
"This is a very dangerous drug," he said.
"It can absolutely kill you and there are recorded deaths from it. It's called grievous bodily harm and that's what it does to you.
"The seriousness of some of these people that presented themselves on Saturday night really concerned us and it's only a matter of time before we get a death."
Director of Drug and Alcohol Research and Education Australia, Paul Dillon, said GHB was a lethal drug.
"It can kill, and has killed. People are really playing Russian roulette with their lives."
Dozens of party-goers were taken to hospital after two rave parties at Kryal Castle last year.
Police Inspector David Blencowe denied suggestions police should have shut down Saturday night's event.
Up to 2000 party-goers filled Festival Hall for the drug-fuelled dance party.
Police face a huge task on New Year's Eve for the Sensation event.
"Certainly with an event like that I would imagine there would be significant police resources deployed and there would be a number of proactive steps taken, as well as trying to actually police the event," he said.
Organisers of Sensation distanced themselves from Saturday night's emergency.
"Sensation has asked people not to take drugs and are doing anything police and safety officers have asked," spokeswoman Erin Jameson said.
Lord Mayor Robert Doyle slammed irresponsible rave-party operators.
"You don't give permits to people for these rave parties unless they can show us a great track record in managing large numbers of kids at a rave party," he said.

WTF? what can an orginiser do to stop that dick heads taking GBH. Maybe call ravesafe to the site and get them check their drugs. But i think its not allowed anymore.

But on a more serious note - shit like this is really sad to see. I kind of thought that GHB had taken a back seat in re to the rave scene, but obviously not.
Whats worse is the fact that when shit like this reaches the mainstream media, its not just a few seperate events that gain a bad name, but the whole scene - everything related to electronic music gains negative exposure.
Its dreadful when a minority ruin it for the majority - cause im sure this type of moronic drug use is only segregated to a small group of idiotic people.

Also, haven't they been cracking down on parties for two decades now? Yet the scene is still here, albeit in an altered form, since the whole 'rave' aesthetic and ethos is more or less dead.

It was also reported on the front page of the herald Sun that it all took place at Xmas Kandy. An event that is due to take place Christmas night.
As a result Billboards pulled the plug on Kandy and now they have had to cancelle their night.
3 months of work or that promoter down the drain because their name was falsely used in a write up.
Let me take this opportunity to ease patron's concerns that open dex is taking every step working with Victorian Police to rid its nights of GHB and teaching people the safe ways on how to take it

There is grounds there to sue. But the Herald Sun arnt an easy mob to take thru the legal system. It will most likely settle out of court for no where near what he lost on the gig and damage done to the brand.
yeah i reckon herald sun get sued at least 15 times a week.. they probably have the most epic team of lawyers behind them..
shame, people just want to put on a party but because certain types of this party attract certain drug takers, journalists pounce on the chance to to pick em apart and slander their name for the sake of a story...
still, if i were behind the organisation putting on that party and had some cash up my sleeve, i'd take those c*nts to court too and sue them for defamation and make em pay for the court fees too.

Despite what you may "know" or hear, you're able to take GHB safely. Yes, it's easier to have too much than a lot of drugs, but if you take it easy and know your limits then there's no problems. I do agree however that in ignorant hands, it can be quite ugly as seen on the weekend..
I take G semi regularly and I don't have any problems with it. Just have to be sensible when you're out. I usually keep the whole "I'm on G" thing to myself since the stigma is fairly bad...
fuckin hate the herald sun, at least they didnt use quotes from ITM to provide "evidence" for their ludicrous claims this time, like they did for Kryal...
very dissapointing though, why is it that conservative people can never see BENEATH the superficial problem to the real issue???
pretty funny the compare a hard-style event to sensation though... would be hard to get more difference in an event 
the only thing i know about G is that it seems to be taken by complete n00bs (who don't know what they're doing), and it ends up spoiling things for the rest of us trying to have fun, not just trying to get fkd up...

It is indeed very sad that a handful of junkies take down the whole scene with them.
I am a raver. I love Hard Style, Hard Trance, electronic music in general.. I love to witness the sunrise over the hills of Kryal Castle.
Kryal got closed off because of a similar incident (and the help of amplified statements from the news & struggling hospitals in Ballarat). -- I notice that closing off Kryal didn't solve the problem.
I think the only solution is to educate our kids about the danger of drugs, how UNCOOL they have become. I am trying to teach my Daughter to be strong enough to say no (the day she gets confronted to cigarettes and drugs). It may take a long time, generations perhaps, but eventually it will pay off, just like cigarettes are totally uncool these days. (It is also a good idea to tell your kids that you love them). Banning drugs and bringing sniffing dogs is futile; it has been like that for decades.
It is sad to see that the older generation reads the articles with contempt.. but then again, was there anyone sick at The Doors concert, at Bob Marley's gigs , at The Beatles live gig, which (now elderly) person was tripping at pink floyd ?
On the Chrismats Kandy issue: I find it appalling that news reporters can't get their facts right.. these are the people that tell us what's happening around the world, give us advice on what's happening on the share Market, etc.. what a bunch of R-Tards !.
