Question about reinstalling regarding synths and Hosts

Hi guys, i m about to "clean up my computer", as in reinstall windows and stuff, so i wanted to know if i had all my synths and Live installed on a different Hardrive than where windows is located, will they still work although the "system hardrive" is being formatted`??

and if not, could i just ....save ..the saves of Live and synths so that if i had to reinstall these programs i would still have all my data and presets??

thx

Usually the project file for your sequencer will save the patch information in a song. If you have saved patch information outside of the track, for like you mentioned presets, you will have to find those patch files and back them up.

Usually registration information and other things are needed for hosts to recognize the VST so just copying them back to the VST folder that the host uses will probably not work for most of them.

Actually I've found that in a lot of cases all thats required is the actual VST dll file. But on the whole I think your right, especially for more complex synths.

Just do a proper reinstall and format both drives.

A lot will continue to work, but the ones that require extensive product authentication need to have their registrations re-done. Its a hassle, but that is DRM for you.

Probably products that need registration will need you to reverify it. But normally presets and patches used in your project are stored with the project save (at least that's how FL Studio does it).
