Scientology, Autism and the Death of Jett Travolta. My Take On It + The Cor Version

taken from toronto mikes blog:

The 16-year old son of actors John Travolta and Kelly Preston, Jett Travolta, died today in the Bahamas. According to sources, Jett suffered a seizure at his family's vacation home at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel on Grand Bahama Island.

A few years ago, Hollywood, Interrupted published a plea from Hollywood for the Travoltas to open their hearts regarding Jett. That page doesn't seem to load properly anymore, so I'm re-posting the plea below.

A PLEA FROM HOLLYWOOD: JOHN TRAVOLTA - OPEN YOUR HEART! - April 10, 2006

On Friday, April 7th, Hollywood, Interrupted was treated to the Los Angeles premiere of "Normal People Scare Me" - a feature-length documentary about autism, co-directed by the high functioning autistic teenager Taylor Cross and his mother, Keri Bowers. The event was sponsored by an organization called Cure Autism Now (CAN) and the new magazine, The Autism Perspective (TAP).

This enlightening film was produced by b-movie actor/director/producer and former special education teacher, Joey Travolta. Joey's brother and sister-in-law, "Battlefield Earth" co-stars John Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston, were not present. Too bad...

...Had John and Kelly been at the screening, they might have a better understanding of the disorder reportedly affecting their 14 year-old son, Jett. Sadly, the Scientology couple cannot even publicly admit that their son is afflicted with a neurological disorder, lest - according to the incontrovertible doctrine of Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard - he be labeled a "degraded being" that brought his affliction onto himself. Instead, the Travoltas have long blamed their son's disability on Kawasaki Syndrome-related "environmental toxins," specifically carpet cleaning chemicals.

Rumors about Jett Travolta's disability have been floating around for years, but when no less than five sources (including a media rep from the Autism Society of America (ASA), an executive from Cure Autism Now, a major Hollywood producer and parent of an autistic child, and a Hollywood actor-parent) reported that Jett Travolta was afflicted did we decide to deliver this story. Scientology will not even recognize the disability, let alone the myriad therapies for treating it.

The CAN and ASA officials that spoke with Hollywood, Interrupted credited Sylvester Stallone and former pro football greats Doug Flutie and Dan Marino as celebrity parents of children with autism that have helped raise awareness of the malady. These celebs reportedly share their frustration with what they perceive as Travolta's "denial" stemming from Scientology's rabid hatred of psychiatry and judgment of those with psychological problems as lesser humans responsible for their own maladies.

The Hollywood actor interviewed describes having autism as "like being trapped within yourself, and having difficulty letting normal people know who you really are." Now, imagine being trapped inside a mind-control cult that prohibits you from availing your child to the treatment available. No wonder Scientology has long been plagued by suicides, and wrongful deaths.

The movie producer that spoke with Hollywood, Interrupted reports: "Kelly Preston, in her heart, wants to do the right thing for her son." "I bet it rips her heart out," says the actor. "But," says the producer," John Travolta has so far, done nothing to help raise awareness about autism."

Tragically, Scientology does nasty things to the heart. "And to the other families who are being torn apart by this disorder," sighs the actor. "Let me know if I can help you appeal to his heart." Hollywood, Interrupted believes that you may have done just that.

My heart goes out to anyone who loses a child, especially at such a very young age, but I can't help but wonder if Scientology is to blame. The entire concept of a "degraded being" is difficult for me to stomach.

Details are still emerging about Jett's death, but it sounds as if his affliction was acknowledged by everyone who knew him, except his parents. It would be difficult to believe devout followers of Scientology would do all they could do for someone suffering from a neurological disorder.

It's a shame this open plea fell on deaf ears years ago.

Great peice of writing here.but hes far nicer about it than i am.obviously the revoltas refused to reconize thier sons autism based on thier scientology beliefs(scientology does not reconize autism as a viable mental disorder) instead attribituting thier sons illness as "kawasaki disease".

even if this were true this is a disease that must be treated with traditional medicine.but heres how the revoltas treated it:

"A dedicated Scientologist, Preston told Williams that she credited a detoxification program from the writings of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard with helping improve her son's health"

once again scientology does not reconize modern medicine for treatment of illnesses(since they also dont reconize the illness in general).furthermore, many doctors who have seen footage of jett travolta up close as well as in person have stated he displays classic signs of autism. and as for the kawasaki disease its almost non existant in older children.

i give a little credit here to cnn,as they try to point this out without coming across as being bias against the revoltas:

Dr. Sanjay Gupta said on "Larry King Live:
"You get pretty sick for a few days. In the worst-case scenario, sometimes it can affect the blood vessels of the heart, called the coronary arteries," Gupta said. "Sometimes they can develop aneurysms in it. That's probably the most dangerous thing. But again, this is typically a disease associated with young children. It's typically in Japan, and it's pretty rare."

Gupta said it was rare for teens to display symptoms of the disease, which usually occurs in young children.

lets face it here, the revoltas killed thier son, plain and simple.their refusal to reconize thier childs illness based on thier beliefs put the nails in this kids coffin years ago.

i wonder what if any kind of backlash this incident may have against the revoltas and scientology in general, as most media will treat this story with kid gloves since it involves the death of someone so young.

im hoping someone with any kind of serious credentials will speak out and comdemn the revoltas for their role in thier childs death.but i doubt it will happen.a shame truly.

congratulations john, you killed your only son.

Cor version:
John Revolta killed his son.

my favorite part:

"A dedicated Scientologist, Preston told Williams that she credited a detoxification program from the writings of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard with helping improve her son's health"

Seriously... fuck what the doctors say? What arrogance for a pathetic actress to think she can read the writings of a science fiction writer and come up with a better treatment plan.

OK thats quite idiotic what happened here, and I do believe that there should be an investigation and if it is discovered that the travoltas knowingly took the steps that would endanger their sons life, they should be punished for it.

However lets not kid ourselves that scientologist are the only idiots who refuse medical treatment on the grounds of religion. I think that a while ago a story was posted in the cor when the parents of the child, instead of getting her medical treatment decided to pray her to health. Equality stupid and prime candidates to spend a few years behind bars, if for nothing else than because they are too stupid to be let into the society.

The kid didn't follow Scientology the right way. If he did, he would still be alive.

And when that person everyone prayed for suddenly takes a turn for the better, everyone's prayers are confirmed, God was clearly listening, we'll just have to do it that way next time, too. When said person takes a turn for the worse however, it must have all been a part of God's plan.

Beliefs are a remarkable thing though. A variety of methods of physical and psychological therapy quite rely on this very same belief dynamic - though it is without an appeal to religion, the gist is similar: when one believes they can get better through the power of [x], they will more often than not become better. I think many people would find it quite unsettling how our supposed advanced medicine operates on the ability of the human body to alleviate itself through the screen of a healthy mind. It's precisely what Scientologists object to a great deal of psychiatric science over - and are they necessarily wrong? Well, to appeal it to some sort of cosmic reincarnation cult, yeah, they're tits, but who is to say that medication is truly the "correct" way to fix a human being when you could easily circumvent the crude chemicals of it all with force of will, alone? Why, pharmaceutical conglomerates, of course!

I very much doubt that the Travoltas intentionally killed their son. The hysteria behind a belief system so often convinces people of their correctness to an irrational state though... but can anyone disconnect themselves from the hegemonic standard of what is rational for just long enough to see that belief in drugs is what makes a belief system fringe? Or does all of the self-supported "proof" of modern medical vivisection indict religious belief as a lesser panacea to the obviously greater frailties of our being?

OK, I'm not trying to defend the Travoltas or Scientology, especially if it was used as an excuse to withhold care from their son. However, I think it's funny that we have a whole buttload of armchair doctors willing to second-guess and diagnose based on zero medical knowledge and fragments of actual information coupled with tons of hearsay and gossip. Jett is going to have an autopsy and the case will be settled. Until then it's simply the tragic death of a 16-year old with a set of devastated parents who you can hate all you want. It's pretty pathetic though to use his death to fuel that hate when we don't even know what the fuck really happened yet.

Posted by winston on Jan-04-2009 02:56:

who cares? There are bigger problems out there, wake the fuck up!

scientology has a long history of peddling conspiracy science re psychiatry to its followers. as far as i know they are yet to be taken to task for it. i shudder to think how much damage they do to people in genuine need of medication.

*Note: This post not a commentary on whether or not people should fuck with them. They just don't.

that's a fair point. innocent until proven guilty of course.

stating that scientology is a dangerous cult that tells lies about brain medicine is pretty factual however.

Posted by RJT on Jan-04-2009 03:28:

Everything is a dangerous cult these days. iPods, Scientology, Jimmy Dean Microwavable Breakfast Sandwiches, birth control methods - it's all just so delightfully cultish.
