The most useless "Study" ever conducted... paid for with your tax money

Ironically, the headline itself is racist....

have fun with this one!

Whites may be more racist than they think: study

Most white people say they would react strongly to racism, but don't do anything when they actually witness prejudice, Canadian and U.S. researchers said on Thursday.

They said white college students who heard someone make racist remarks in a study failed to confront that person, and this may be part of what perpetuates racism.

"People do not think of themselves as prejudiced, and they predict that they would be very upset by a racist act and would take action," said Kerry Kawakami, a psychology professor at York University in Toronto, Canada, whose study appears in the journal Science.

"However, we found that their responses are much more muted than they expect when they are actually faced with an overtly racist comment," Kawakami said in a statement.

For the study, the researchers evaluated 120 white students in Canada who were exposed to racism while waiting for what they thought was the real experiment to begin.

A white student posing as a study participant makes a racist comment about a black participant when he briefly leaves the room. The remarks ranges from moderate to extreme racial slurs. When the black student returns, the actual participants are asked to choose partners for a subsequent exercise.

They found 63 percent of study participants chose the person who made the racist comment as a partner.

"We were all surprised at the discrepancy between what people thought they would do and what people actually did when they were put in that situation," John Dovidio of Yale University in Connecticut, who also worked on the study, said in a telephone interview.

"They didn't shun the person who made an obvious racist remark, and in fact they showed a slight tendency at wanting to work with this person," he said.

Those who actually experienced the encounter were less distressed than those who read about or watched a video of the encounter. The latter were much more likely to say they would not work with such a person.

"Some of this may be due to the situation. We don't have a lot of practice about how to respond," Dovidio said.

Ironically, he said, many other studies have found people who are confronted after making racial comments are far less likely to repeat the behavior.

"By not doing anything you are actually contributing to a society that will be racist in the future," he said.

Racist jokes are hilarious, that's why. Who DOESN'T want to work in a group with the funny guy?

the news sensationalizes a tiny, narrow study because of the inflammatory conclusions.

nothing new, lol.

there could be many other factors that influenced the results, other than 'racism'...but that wouldn't make news.

did they control for someone making *any* remark to see if people would choose to work with that person (i.e. 'familiarity' vs. racism...someone speaking out PERIOD might make them more 'attractive' as a partner).

just one of many other variables. anyway...the media is no doubt distorting it. the prof and others recognize that's the results merely a suggest further research paths, with larger samples, a more controls in the design of the study, etc.

I blame genetics for my rasism.

The only thing truly remarkable about this is that something was actually studied at York.

Maybe now they can study why unions attract such crybabies that have to whine for job security instead of actually earn it like the rest of us.

Maybe the study would have come to a different conclusion if it actually defined "racism" as "racism" as opposed to "racially-related remarks".

You can prove just about anything by changing the definitions. It's also ironic how the study makes no mention of black students - they were only interested in whites, because, of course, only Caucasians can be racist.

What really fries me, though, is the obvious implication throughout the article and even in the very first sentence that we should be complete douchenozzles and "confront" anybody who makes a "racist" comment. I heard through the grapevine that Queen's actually hired students to walk around doing exactly this. I was ashamed. If I were having an entertaining and politically-incorrect conversation with a friend and some total stranger decided to interrupt us and lecture me about how to be more PC, I would absolutely punch him in the nuts.

Remember kids. Only white people commit hate crimes.

People have tried to tell me off after overhearing my conversations and it wasnt even about race etc. But apparently telling them to mind their own business makes me the rude one. LOL

i think its because we have reached a limit and cant take it anymore. There is definately a PC backlash going on now.

If I were to guess, I'd say a lot of them are accustomed to being tight-lipped around other Canadians, and when they're around Americans it's like the sheltered college freshman going to a bar for the first time.

Eventually one of these "studies" will show that forcing people not to say something doesn't prevent them from thinking it, not even over time, and that in the tiny minority of cases where true racism still exists, speech codes aren't going to change anything. The only cure for prejudice is exposure and in some cases substance abuse.
