Anyone have any suggestions for ones that are under $1000? My sister wants one and I don't really know what is good and what is not.

lol yes I am aware of that camera. Although while it is $17.5k, actual costs including lenses and what not will run you around $80k average. My buddy has worked with these a few times. He said they are badass.

So, any other suggestions people?!

I'd suggest a panasonic Tri-CCD dv cam but it depends what the person wants to do in which case higher resolution and different format applies

Its more for editing and then printing to film or for digital theatres. TV gets scaled down again off that.

Well the output format is dependent on whatever camera I tell them to get. lol

It must be at least 720p, preferably 1080p, as this is something they want to last pretty well into the current and next generation of 1080p format TVs.

I did, and I checked it out. It is very much so on the list. I am just trying to get other solutions so that I am not just being narrow-minded in the choice I give my sister.

the Sony SR10-SR11-SR12 are the only solid competitors handheld HD cameras... but are a bit more expensive.

I have researched this extensively and I decided to pickup the HF100 because it takes SDHC cards and those are dirt cheap now (picked two 16g card for 20$ each on boxing day)

Yeah that is one thing I am loving about flash memory.

Also, remember budget is US$1000, so if it is over US$600 that is fine. It looks like the SR11 can be had for US$700-800.

My best advice, get the HF100, an extended long life battery for 100$, two 16 gig cards and a carrying bag, for around 800 give or take.

You can find a wide angle lense for well under 200, very useful. Just get any 37mm diameter wide angle lense, from Sony or a reputable brand. Some are really cheap.

I had a Sony one laying around and it worked perfectly.
